Ohio’s public defender system was created in 1976 by Chapter 120 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Timothy Young is the Director of the Office of the Ohio Public Defender, which is overseen by the nine-member Ohio Public Defender Commission. The Office is divided into Death Penalty, Legal, Juvenile, and Administrative divisions, as well as the Trumbull County Branch Office and the Multi-County Program.

This week, State Public Defender Elizabeth Miller testified before the Sunset Review Committee, which is tasked with evaluating various state agencies to determine their usefulness, performance, and effectiveness. State Public Defender Miller was proud to share information with the committee about the important work of the Ohio Public Defender Commission and the Office of the Ohio Public Defender, and how both entities are essential to providing indigent defense services to the most vulnerable Ohioans.

OPD's Trial Services Division is hosting a new virtual training, Bridging the Gap: Understanding Federal v. State Sentencing, on June 27. The virtual training runs from 8:30-2:30 and will include four presentations with 15-minute breaks in between. The Office of the Ohio Public Defender has applied for 4 General CLE credits, pending Supreme Court approval.

This virtual training aims to provide attorneys with critical insights into the complexities of multi-jurisdictional sentencing. Presented by experts from the Ohio Public Defender's Office (OPD), Federal Defenders, and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), the sessions will equip attorneys with a comprehensive understanding of federal and state sentencing guidelines, interstate compact concerns, and PRC/parole issues.

The training is provided at no cost and is open to anyone in the indigent defense community.
