Happy New Year! We can’t wait to see the progress that we know 2024 will bring to our clients and families!

The excitement and stressors of December seem to trigger moments of dysregulation more often. This reflection is a nice reminder that we aren’t expected or needed to be perfectly regulated when our children aren’t. Instead, focus on co-regulation through *connection.*

Could these views from a weekly school visit be any better?! Did you know Rise Kids collaborates with 10 (and counting!) area private schools and preschools to provide in-school evaluations and treatment sessions? We’re so grateful to families for trusting us with their children’s care in these environments and for each school’s administrative, teaching, and support staff!

After a week of festivities, candy, and excitement, our household is prone to “red engines” on Halloween night. To help, we’re doing some simple movement and heavy work activities before getting out the door to calm and ready our sensory systems for the fun. Awaking the brain-body connection in moments like this goes a long way!

Independence - something we work toward every day with you, the families we are so grateful to serve! Happy 4th of July to you and your families!! ⁣

Here’s a simple way to work toward independence with bead stringing - bracelets! 🇺🇸 Bead stringing is a wonderful bilateral coordination activity that helps little ones learn to use two hands in asymmetrical ways. ⁣

Pro tip: Pipe cleaners are easier than regular string and spring-loaded scissors give an extra boost! We love the brand! ⁣

There is no more sensory-rich place than the great outdoors! Here are some *easy* ways to engage kids outside - using only a 🖊 🌳 📦 ✂️ & rubber bands. These activities work great with kids 1-10!

We use obstacle courses during therapy sessions and play at home to work on any kind of goal! The key is to make clear start and endpoints to maximize attention and repetition. Even better: make the start point a collection of items that the child brings through the course one at a time. That makes it clear when the task is finished. ⠀

☘️ May you find some magic today! ☘️⠀

We were inspired to stimulate our olfactory and our tactile systems in the creation of this season’s sensory bin! ☘️ Use kale or spinach to dye rice for a change! It’s a great use for the the least fresh leaves in the refrigerator. 😉⠀

☘️Blend 1-2 cups kale or spinach + 1 tblsp vinegar + water⠀
☘️Strain⠀
☘️Mix dyes liquid with rice in freezer bag⠀
☘️Let dry⠀

Then enjoy play at any level in the rice!⠀
☘️ Visual perceptual - color-sort used pouch caps, find magnetic letters, match sight words ⠀
☘️Fine motor - Use tongs or tweezers to dig out small toys.
☘️ Working on self-regulation? Find a green, red, or blue object to match the Alert Program “engine zone” of a book character. ⠀

We’re here reflecting on the pandemic anniversary with such an abundance of feelings. How brave we have all been! And how extraordinarily brave you have been if you’re living this with a child with unique needs, maybe even newly diagnosed ones. You are a superhero! On this anniversary, may we celebrate our strength and adaptability and look, with hope, toward a future that is better than we can imagine and full of more hugs!⠀

Thank you to for this beautiful artwork. What a unique and peaceful voice she is on social media.⠀

The daffodils may be blooming here in Charlotte, but the question remains: will today feel more like winter or spring? 🌼❄️Here are two indoor activities to help you through the chilly/cloudy parts of the day.⠀

🐧Penguin Ice Cubes - Freeze a thin layer of water in ice cube trays, place small animal figurines (of any kind) on top, fill with more water, and freeze again. Once frozen, your little one can “skate” the animals around a baking sheet or even write letters or draw shapes on paper. The smaller the animal, the more it will work on the tripod grasp needed to hold a pencil. ⠀

⛄️Trash Bag & Blanket Snowman - Fill trash bags with blankets, stack, and decorate. Move the snowman around the house for great heavy work. Think of heavy work as “kid exercise.” It grounds, calms, and organizes typical and atypical sensory systems alike. ⠀

🥑🍓🥦🥕Raising happy eaters starts early! One of the best foundational habits you can establish is a family mealtime. Eating is a 30+ step process that children first learn from caregiver modeling. The earlier the better! Bring supported sitters (4-6 months) to the table for mealtimes. They can explore foods or simply interact with you while you do.⠀

➡️Swipe right for a trick for short attention spans at the table. ⠀

🏳Do you have a picky or problem eater in your family? Does he/she refuse to sit at the table for mealtimes? Or prefer to graze? Feeding is one of our specialties! We can help with sensory-based feeding issues through the teen years!⠀

Happy Valentine’s Day! Thank you for showing this little practice so much love! 💙💗⠀

We loved making classic 🧻 roll hearts this year. Started bravely with acrylic paint stamping 😬 then water colors to finish. Pro tip - put a rubber band around the roll to help it stamp evenly in the heart shape. ⠀
