American Robins

The American Robin's scientific, Latin name is 'Turdus migratorius'. 'Turdus' may sound funny, but it refers to the family of thrush songbirds (Turdidae) that Robins are related to. The 'migratorius' portion of their name was given due to the large flocks of robins that form during migration and the winter season. While American Robins may be considered a sign of spring by many, their movement patterns lead them to be a very busy bird that can be seen throughout the year all over the states.

Orioles
Time flies, and before you know it, birds will be on the move for migration! Peak migration doesn't take place until September and October. There are many birds that we don't normally see in North Carolina that pass through during migration, so it doesn't hurt to be on the look out! One migrant to get excited for is the Baltimore Oriole! Orioles are a larger, blackbird species that garner a lot of attention with their bright orange feathers. These birds are the very reason you may see fruit or jelly feeders out in the coming months.Check out https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/ to learn more about your favorite birds. Vireos
Vireos are a family of songbirds that have quite the style! You can often identify these birds by their distinct 'spectacles' or eyeliner markings. By far one of my personal favorite ID points. In North Carolina, vireos can be found in the summer or winter depending on the species and location. Some, like the Red-eyed Vireo, migrate between North and South America for nesting. You may have to check your local park or greenway to find these birds, but now is the best time to get acquainted with our summertime residents. House Finches
House Finches have easily adapted to urban areas over the years. Whether you see them at the feeders, or have a pair nesting on a wreath on your door, these birds are a common sight in the bird-feeding hobby. Just because they are common does not mean they do not have an interesting history! Due to many factors, the House Finch is one of the best-studied birds in North America today. Cowbirds
Named after the bison they followed, cowbirds have since expanded their range throughout much of the eastern United States. These birds can often be found traveling with other blackbird species. During nesting season, cowbirds are commonly known for brood parasitism - the act of laying their own eggs in another songbird species nest. This has impacted many songbird species populations, but some species have found ways to avoid raising the cowbird's young.Check out https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/ to learn more about your favorite birds. Eastern Phoebes
There are many species of flycatchers, but the Eastern Phoebe is one of the few that will take advantage of wooded neighborhoods and buildings. You can often find an Eastern Phoebe by listening for its distinct "phoebe" song as it hunts for insects. Some people may get a closer look at these birds if an Eastern Phoebe decides to nest under the eaves of a house! Killdeer
Killdeer are one of the easiest plover species to find due to their widespread population and habitat choices. Unlike other plovers, you don't have to explore coastal areas to spot this species. You can find Killdeer at your local park, athletic field, or golf course, wandering around as the forage for food. During nesting season, they nest in the most curious places, such as the middle of a gravel path. Check out https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/ to learn more about your favorite birds.
