Greybeard Props
Just me and my adventures in prop-making for cosplay and more.
A friend asked for some help with a haunted experience for her daughter’s elementary school.
I know I haven’t posted much of anything lately. That’s because, since February, I’ve been working as a set dresser and now props assistant on a tv show. That has left me very little free time and what I have had, I’ve been spending with my family (and sleeping). Hopefully, I’ll have some new projects to share soon!
In the meantime, here’s a little throwback to the Kevin (the bird from Up) that I built a few years ago.
Some prop repair work I did prior to season 5 of Dwight in Shining Armor.
Rainbow over the new shop.
Still have a couple windows and some siding to install, but we are officially dried-in! Move in starts tomorrow!!!
We had a covid delay, but we’re back in action. We finished the back half of the roof today! The peak is about 26 ft in the air and I absolutely hate being up there! Unfortunately, Brandon can’t do it alone.
“Can you make a pirate eye patch? And make it look homemade?”
Pretty sure I can handle that! 😊
My first tv prop debuted tonight on Dwight in Shining Armor!
Christine: You make things. We need some carnival-type games.
Me: Yes, Dear.
Bean bag toss and ring toss made.
Gruncle Stan cane is done!
Sometimes, the props are actually for me! Any guesses what cosplay this is for? 😉
And, it’s done. It’s 4 and a half feet tall and used too many rhinestones to count. Hope she likes it! 😊
And, the hard part is done. Just have to wait for the rod to arrive and it will be ready for pick up.
Making progress. The sides are done. Now, I’m working on the edges which is very slow-going. I think I can safely say that I NEVER want to see another rhinestone again lol.

One side is done.
Making the “Wicked” version of Glinda’s wand for a friend. I don’t care if I never see another one of these little jewels again! lol
Mad-Eye Moody staff is done and will be delivered tonight.
A little throwback to when I built Kevin from “Up”. That’s my daughter, Brittany, inside of it.
The pandemic has caused a huge slow-down in my ability to make props, but Mad-Eye Moody’s staff just needs to be painted and it will be done.
The new home for Greybeard Props is coming along. Can’t wait to start creating again!
Don’t like sewing? Try hand-stitching leather! lol
I know I haven’t posted much lately. With an unexpected move and then the pandemic, things have been a little crazy. But, Greybeard Props will have a new home soon. My son-in-law is building a two-story workshop for us! (I only get the first floor. My wife gets the second floor 😊)
This was an interesting build because I had to match the color on the pouch at the back without knowing what dye was used. After a bit of trial and error, I as able to match it exactly.
Technically, Kevin from “Up” was a costume, not a prop. But it was definitely built like a prop. The framework was built out of chicken wire and covered in fabric soaked in a glue/water mixture to hold the shape. I attached each feather individually. Sadly, Kevin didn’t survive the ride home from Dragon Con lol. Kevin 2.0 may happen one day.
If you were ever curious about how Mr. Bubbles was made, here you go!
This was a fun little project. Megan Nelson is easily one of the most talented cosplayers I know. She was putting together her Rita Skeeter cosplay so I decided to try and come up with a “working” version of Rita’s Quick Quotes Quill. The quill needed to stand on its own AND move without any noticeable wires, etc. This was a short little video showing the quill in action.
Batgirl can’t leave home without her utility belt! It was so much fun to make this for my dear friend and amazing cosplayer, Kat Smith!
Sometimes prop-making is all in the idea. This is one of my favorite props, but was incredibly simple to put together.
I wanted something for Mr Smee to have when volunteering without Tinkerbell.
Cosplay props are actually trickier than making something new and unique because you’re trying to match the original for a screen accurate look.
This is a Luke Skywalker belt from A New Hope that I made for a friend. The pic on the bottom is the original from the movie. The one on the top is my replica.
While the adults love Gilderoy Lockhart’s book, it doesn’t compare to the reactions I get from kids when they see the Mad Hatter’s unbirthday cake. I mostly do the Mad Hatter for parades and volunteer events. The look on children’s faces when I lift my hat and they see a cake...priceless!
Easily the biggest and most difficult prop I’ve ever made. Mr Bubbles took me almost 10 months to complete (partly because I was a full-time teacher at the time). I still love this cosplay and plan on bringing him back out in 2020, after I make some adjustments.
This was a test run so I didn’t have all of the lights installed yet. As far as I know, it’s the only video of my Mr Bubbles.
One of the most popular props I’ve ever made. It still amazes me how much people love my Gilderoy Lockhart book. It also amazes me how amazed people are by it. Just seemed like a simple idea when I came up with it.
