Tsunami Evacuation Wayfinding

🌊Do you know where to go in the event of a #tsunami?🌊

Join Josh Blockstein, Briseida Alcantar and Diana Niño as they teach you how to reach higher ground. You'll learn where to find maps for evacuation routes, how to look for evacuation signs, why you shouldn't rely on your cell phone to read a map, how long to stay in the safe area, and the importance of identifying meeting points. Follow along in Spanish or read the English captions.

These videos are products of the Cascadia CoPes Hub, a team of researchers who aim to help coastal communities prepare for and adapt to earthquakes, tsunamis, sea level rise, landslides, erosion, and climate change.

Many thanks to Consejo Hispano, OSU Extension in Clatsop County, Josh, Jenna Tilt, Kim Kenny, Irene Pablo-Lora, and Clatsop County residents Naty Márquez, Angel Márquez and Briseida. Our own Felicia Olmeta Schult was the executive producer.

Want to learn more about our Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor Center and K-12 marine education programs? In this interview for #DamProudDay, our own Lindsay Carroll describes why they're so important in inspiring curiosity and stewardship for our coastal and marine environments. Please consider making a gift to bit.ly/support_marine_ed to support affordable, family-friendly marine education experiences.

Oregon Sea Grant's director, Karina Nielsen, and our marine educator Lindsay Carroll were interviewed today for Oregon State University's annual #DamProudDay fundraiser. They spoke about how your donation to beav.es/S2y supports marine education at our Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor Center.

Jess Schulte, a Malouf scholar who is funded by Oregon Sea Grant, has wrapped up her first season of fieldwork with broadnose sevengill sharks. She's written about it in these blog posts: bit.ly/3gCNfcC. This year, Jess tagged the sharks with transmitters and collected tissue samples and stomach contents to understand where these predators go, what they eat and how they may affect the ecosystem and populations of salmon, halibut and crabs. She'll continue her fieldwork next year. Jess is a doctoral student in the College of Agricultural Sciences - Oregon State University. Here's a video of her releasing a shark back into Washington's Willapa Bay after collecting samples.

We recently shared a study co-authored by Oregon Sea Grant Marine Mammal Extension researcher, Leigh Torres. The study examined interactions between fishing vessels and seabirds in an effort to improve fishing efficiency and reduce bycatch. The caveat- a decade ago, this research would have never been possible. Enter the Global Fishing Watch database. The data used for this study was a part of a global database developed by the Global Fishing Watch which provides near real-time information about fishing activity. As principle investigator of the study, Rachel A. Orben, describes it, "...our analysis methods to assess when, where and why marine animals interact with fishing vessels can be applied to many other marine species in order to understand and reduce conflicts with fisheries." Interview with Amanda Cavitt from the Garibaldi Portside Bistro
We've got dueling Amandas on this week's remote #ShopAtTheDock: Amanda Gladics of Oregon Sea Grant interviews Amanda Cavitt, the general manager of the Garibaldi Portside Bistro. Cavitt shares her insights on keeping seafood on the menu during the COVID-19 pandemic, how they prepare their smoked albacore tuna melt (yum!), and her advice for cooking seafood at home. Do you have questions for the chefs at the bistro or want individualized advice about cooking seafood? Contact the bistro through their page. They're happy to help! This will be the last of our Shop at the Dock videos for a while, as we figure out a new approach for future videos and how and when we can resume in-person tours in Garibaldi. When we do, we hope you'll join us to learn more about the amazing, hard-working community that brings delicious Oregon seafood from the ocean to your plate. We hope you all have enjoyed meeting just a few of the people who are involved with Garibaldi seafood. Have seafood questions? Submit them to Extension's Ask an Expert at extension.oregonstate.edu/ask-expert. Have an idea or a question you would like to see addressed on a future video? Email [email protected]. Thanks for watching! Seafood Oregon
