Eye doctor’s take on polarized sunglasses.

Polarized lenses cut down on horizontally reflected light, which translates to better optics around bodies of water, snow, or with glare off of car hoods when driving. They don’t enhance UV protection, but for the improvement in optics, they’re the sunglass lens option I usually go for.

Either way, whether you go polarized or non-polarized, the most important thing is that you’re wearing some sort of sun protection to prevent UV skin damage and premature cataracts.

Eye doctor explains how to treat eyelid styes. Eyelid styes are essentially eye pimples that can be treated at home with warm compresses, gentle lid massage, and lid/lash hygiene. For those styes that are stubborn or worsening over time, oral antibiotics from your local optometrist may be needed. And for those cases that persist for > 1 month, surgical exicision may be required. Follow for more eye related content! #eyelids #styes #eyelidpimple #eyedoctorexplains #optometrist

Eye doctor confessions. Which ones are you guilty of? #eyedoctorsbelike #doctorconfessions #optometristhumor #dontdodrugskids

What the heck are eye doctors doing when they cover and uncover your eyes like this? This is the cover test, and it is used by optometrists to check your eye alignment. When the eyes are covered, they go to their natural resting position. In some people, their resting position is slighly inwardly crossed, or “esophoric”. This can cause eyestrain, headaches, and difficulty focusing up close because the eye muscles have to strain to straighten out the eyes. You can also induce this cross eye by wearing the wrong glasses prescription. For instance, this patient had nearsighted glasses that were too strong, resulting in induced esophoria. If you are struggling with eyestrain, headaches, or difficulty maintaining focus, it’s time to get your eyes checked. Longer video of this #eyeinjury case to come. More than 700,000 cases of #oculartrauma occur every year in the USA, 90% of which could have been prevented with proper eye protection. The most common causes are foreign bodies (small pieces of wood, metal, or grit getting into the eyes), blunt injuries from a finger or a fist, chemical burns (yikes), and penetrating injuries from power tools or activities involving projectiles. Comment “YES” below if you want to some gnarly paintball related eye injury pics/vids. Got an eye injury? Emergency eye exams available at www.drwenoptometry.com. Walk ins welcome.

Let’s talk about children’s eyes. Did you know that most vision problems in children go Undetected until a guardian or teacher starts noticing the kid squinting or frequently rubbing their eyes? By then, many of the children are already myopic (nearsighted) or have a lazy eye, meaning they will require glasses for life. The brain is what is used to “see” and without clear visual input getting to the brain, the visual cortex of the brain will not develop properly. This means permanent reduced vision in one or both eyes. To prevent this, make sure your kids get their annual eye exam with a qualified eye doctor just before they start school (~3-4 ears old) and yearly thereafter. And not just a school nurse vision screening, but a comprehensive eye exam, since many of these vision issues gets missed at cursory school screenings. #reels #pediatrics #eyedoctor #optometrist #colorblindness #eveexam #funfacts

When the visit to the eye doctor turns into a life or death situation. This was by far one of the saddest days as an optometrist. It was my first time seeing an ocular melanoma and having to break such bad news to a patient. Because her tumor was so big, local radiation and surgery weren’t an option, meaning she would have to lose the eye. But also because of the spread to distant breast tissues, she had only around a 10-15% five-year survival rate. I was in the room holding her hand as she FaceTimed her daughter to discuss the findings and next steps. And when she told her daughter that she didn’t want to undergo any type of treatment but wanted to go naturally, we all started bawling. Ocular melanomas usually start out as small freckles on the front or back of the eye. These can be detected and tracked with retinal photographs or dilated eye exams by your eye doctor with regular eye exams. If this patient had come in earlier, local radiation or excision could have been an option and she might not have had metastasis to her other body parts. And her five year survival rate could’ve been closer to 85%… Have you had your eyes checked recently? #eyedoctor #optometrist #eyecancer #ocular #melanoma #melanomaawareness #truestory

Saw this case during my rotations through Stanford’s Byers Eye Institute. She ended up needed weeks of aggressive treatment including scraping off the damaged corneal tissue along with super strong topical medications every hour and STILL ended up requiring a full thickness corneal transplant. If you are a contact lens wearer and wake up with a red, painful, mucousy eye… don’t wait. Come in ASAP because you never know if it’s sterile or from some kind of microbial, fungal, or parasitic infection!

Optometrist pet peeve #1: dirty glasses. I swear, dont become an optometrist if you aren’t ready to notice everyone’s glasses all the freaking time... Ideally you should be cleaning your glasses daily with a microfiber cloth and lens spray or mild soap and water. And once every month or two, do a deeper cleaning with a toothbrush and dish soap. But if you don’t got time for that or if you want the deepest clean, bring it in to your local eye shop for a dip in their ultrasonic cleaner every few months or so. If you come to me, I’ll even adjust your glasses for free. Don’t be gross people!
