St. Patrick's Well, "Pozzo di San Patrizio"
It is a historic well in Orvieto, Umbria, central Italy.
It was built to store up water during the war between 1527 and 1537, it was built at the behest of then Pope Clement VII.
The Pope had sought refuge in the city as Rome was being sacked and was concerned that there was not enough water and the city would fall under siege.
The well took almost ten years to complete, and by the time diggers finally struck the water, Pope Clement had passed away.
The cylindrical wall is 53.15 meters (174.4 ft) deep with a base diameter of 13 meters (43 ft).
There are 248 steps and 72 windows that provide illumination.
At the bottom of the well, the water level remains constant thanks to a natural spring that supplies the cavity and a stream that drains excess water.
