This is a field recording of Taiko Drums from the Shumei group in Crestone, CO. Along with a little EQ and tiny amount of saturation, this is a great example of what the SSL SubGen is capable of for adding body and weight to a weak drum recording. SSL SubGen works by listening to an audio signal and then generating subharmonic information that’s related to the incoming signal. This is great for adding punch and low end to a source that may be lacking, such as this awesome taiko group recorded at a distance. Along with the other processing I did this SubGen really brings the drums to life and makes them feel more like a movie soundtrack as opposed to a field recording.
