Listen and watch the struggling story of shooter Avani Lekhara. Avani Lekhara, a 19-year-old champion shooter from Jaipur, created history at the Tokyo Paralympics. She won a 10m Air Rifle SH1 gold medal and a bronze medal in 50m rifle 3 positions at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. She is the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. In 2012, she suffered major injuries to her spinal cord due to a car accident. This left her bound to a wheelchair. Three years later, she was encouraged by her father to choose shooting as a professional sport. Her father took her to both shooting and archery ranges and she tried both, but she felt very connected toward shooting since the first time she held a rifle. After reading Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra’s autobiography, she began taking the sport more seriously. In 2015, her first year as a competing shooter, she won a bronze medal at the national championship with a borrowed rifle from a coach. Since then, she has consistently been at the top in India. Even so, she has battled stiff competition from international players. Six years later, she became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold medal. It was truly a special moment for Indian sports.
