One of the most important steps to building a custom piece is the finishing. What type of finish you choose and how it's applied makes a HUGE difference. For this custom bar, which will be used a lot for pouring drinks, is getting several coats of polyurethane to make sure it's well protected.

As a professional carpenter, the tools one uses matter. That's why I invest a lot of money in the best tools like this new Festool Rotex sander.

What could be causing this bubbling in the lacquer finish?

How good a cabinet or built-in turns out is largely dependent on the finish. Whether it's paint, a urethane, oil, or lacquer like this cabinet, it's important to know your finish.

I spray lacquered this custom cabinet and set it outside to make space in my small shop. Within minutes of sitting in the sun, the lacquer finish began to bubble and harden. This occurs when the temperature of the finish (lacquer in this case) and the surface being sprayed (the custom cabinet) are different temperatures.

Now, a carpenter who doesn't know their finishes would FREAK OUT if this happened but I knew all I had to do is simply buff it down with a light sanding, respray a couple more coats of lacquer, and keep it out of the sun while it dries.

Problem solved and the cabinet turned out amazing!

Always love starting a new build. Here we're building a white oak cabinet that will have matching shelving on both sides for a local church.

Sometimes you just gotta solve the problem. When there's a bow in the wood and it won't sit flush with the wall no matter what you do, it's time to think outside the box.
