These guys crushed it! Literally! 2023 harvest is complete just before the the rainy cold front moves through. All tanks are completely full so fermentation is taking place in 1 ton and half ton fruit bins. They’ve worked four 20 hour days heading into today to get everything off before the rain. In those 4 days we pulled Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carignan, and Tempranillo. The final bin here is Mourvèdre. Now it’s 2 long weeks of punch downs and pressings. Never a dull moment. This was a quality year for every varietal and we can’t wait to share it with you in the next few years. Cheers!
Harvest is still on pause at the moment. The last rain was on Friday. We get numbers sampled today so we’ll see where we are at. It should start back up tonight or tomorrow. In the cellar it’s just as busy as ever testing, making additions, punchdowns, and pressing. Last week before all the storms rolled in we had a visitor to the crush pad. I forgot to post this. It was a first for me, but the guys tell me it happens most nights. I tried to get the lightning in the video too. It was intense.
Merlot and Pinot were processed yesterday and today. Good news is we had a little over 10 tons of Pinot Noir. So that was more than we thought, but we need as much as we can get. It’ll be raining for the next few days. After that we’ll test the remaining varieties for sugar and acid to see where they are at. Then we’ll know when we can get back to harvesting. In the video, the cellar is out of space at the moment. That is why you see the must pump filling totes with Merlot. That’s because we are out of tank space from all the whites. So now the rest of harvest will be a juggling act. We’ll press down the totes of Merlot for 7 days. Then we’ll press the wine away from the skins and either do secondary fermentation (malolactic fermentation) in the barrels, totes, or tanks. Then it’s time to barrel down. During harvest all newly harvested lots of wine need attention almost everyday. That’s why these awesome people spend 18-20 hour days in the cellar during harvest. There is so much work to do that just can’t be put off.
Last night didn’t run as smoothly as planned. We did get 2 of the 4 varieties harvested, Merlot and Malvasia Bianca. We did dodge the rain last night however we will not this evening. We did get Pinot Noir harvested and the bins of fruit will be on the pad this evening before the rain starts. After processing that this evening we will have 3 to 5 days off because of rain. The best thing is we only have red wines left to harvest.
