In the beginning of December, we learned about the introduction of several bills aimed at undermining the rights of the LGBTQIA community. Swiftly, our organizations took action by contacting the GLBT Chamber of Commerce in Dallas to express our apprehensions about the potential repercussions on the community as a whole, as well as the potential implications for future legislation.

In February, the GLBT Chamber of Commerce in Dallas, in collaboration with the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce, enlisted the services of a legislative consulting firm. Their objective was to devise a comprehensive strategy to combat a series of bills that posed a direct threat to our community. These bills, namely HB1266, HB350, HB708, HB643, SB476, SB1601, and SB12, specifically targeted our community's rights and well-being.

Recognizing the magnitude of the impending battle, HV Entertainment, Caven Enterprises, and Texas Arts & Commerce joined forces in March to engage a dedicated team of legislative consultants. With numerous bills on the table, this collaborative effort was undertaken to strengthen our position and effectively advocate for our collective interests.

Leveraging our extensive network, we successfully secured prioritized face-to-face meetings with state representatives and senators to engage in direct discussions regarding our concerns about the bills. Through multiple meetings, we achieved a significant outcome as HB1266, HB350, HB708, HB643, SB476, and SB1601 were ultimately abandoned. However, our focused attention now lies on SB12, the bill that remains of utmost importance to us.

Our ongoing conversations persisted for weeks, during which substitutions and provisions were introduced, resulting in notable improvements within the bill. Through these constructive engagements, we successfully educated the representatives about the significance of drag shows, leading to a dilution of the bill's impact and, ultimately, the removal of all references specifically targeting the art of drag. It is worth noting that these changes were made while still fulfilling the original intent of the bill, which was to prohibit certain behaviors in the presence of individuals under 18 years of age. These positive developments were a direct result of our persistent efforts to inform and enlighten the representatives regarding the importance and cultural value of drag performances.

We acknowledge the crucial role played by our community in rallying together, organizing meetings, and engaging in public advocacy, as these public-facing efforts are essential to achieving our ultimate goal. However, it is also important to shed light on the behind-the-scenes actions that are often not widely shared but are vital in fostering collaboration and achieving positive outcomes. In the spirit of fostering unity and collective action, we are now sharing the steps involved in these behind-the-scenes efforts.

Following its placement in the State of Affairs committee and subsequent scheduling for a hearing, SB12 presented a critical juncture in our battle. In a show of solidarity, our organizations arranged for the transportation of drag queens from Dallas, who joined us to provide testimony. It is important to emphasize that our fight is far from over, as there are still several stages in the legislative process that demand open lines of communication and engagement from all parties involved.

During the testimonies of each drag queen from Dallas, our primary objective was to provide genuine and sincere statements, reflecting their personal experiences and perspectives. We aimed to maintain a neutral stance, ensuring that the doors for ongoing conversations remain open in good faith as the bill progresses.

Within this complex landscape, various scenarios may unfold, and one potentially adverse situation was averted as the bill progressed through the committee. Presently, multiple bills face a state of limbo in the Senate, being held hostage. The Lt. Governor has made threats to bring up the Drag bills in a special session solely dedicated to addressing the original anti-drag language if the bill does not advance. We recognize the seriousness of these threats, and it underscores the importance of maintaining open lines of communication.

The substituted bill is scheduled to be presented on the House floor for a vote this Friday, May 19. We are fully aware that floor amendments that includes anti-drag language can be reintroduced to this bill as well as any other bill during this process. If drag references are added back to the bill, we want to make it clear that we are prepared to take decisive action and utilize all available resources to vigorously oppose such amendments.

We earnestly appeal to the community to come together in unity and solidarity on Friday. As we continue to collaborate with all parties involved, across all fronts, our collective efforts aim to secure a common end goal that upholds the rights and well-being of all individuals.

Our teams are unwavering in their commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the entire LGBTQIA+ community. The purpose of this letter is to offer clarity and dispel any misinformation that may have been circulating on social media. Attached herewith is the bill in its current form, providing a transparent view of its contents. We remain steadfast in our efforts and will continue to work tirelessly each day to advocate for the protection of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

We just got fabulous news: after a nearly sold-out performance, live auction, and direct donations to the fundraiser, they officially raised nearly $17,000 for We Are TB and Action Group (TAG) . Congrats!

Drag bans are bad for business. They hurt revenue for local businesses, lead to a loss of tourism, and are discriminatory against LGBTQ+ businesses. Check out more graphics and other tools in the Digital Advocacy Toolkit at http://bit.ly/3FK5aeh
