Happy holiday times yesterday at the Artisan Holiday Market. We hit our quota for Christmas tunes and it’s not even December yet. Thanks to trio-mates Merik Gillett and Lincoln Apeland, and special guest Mike Garvey on piano.
Fun times yesterday with .gillett and Kyp Green.
Our Sept. 8 gig at the Wine Therapist? Yeah, never mind. I won't bug you about it except to say it's not happening.

Steve Swallow is a famous jazz bassist and composer. On his website he offers lead sheets for lots of his tunes, and when scanning the list some years ago, one caught my eye, “The City of Dallas.” Huh? I could find no evidence that this song (yes, a song — with lyrics) was ever commercially recorded, and even on YouTube only a couple of random covers showed up. Of course I started playing it. Curious about this curious little tune, I emailed Steve Swallow a couple of yeas ago and asked about it. He sent a nice reply, saying that he wrote the song in 1970 at the Fairmont Hotel while backing the singer Jack Jones. Steve was practicing hard in his room, he said, making his famous switch from upright to electric bass, and the song “kind of popped out.” Fast forward to this year, and I sent him this video from a recent gig. Now 82, he sent another nice reply and was, dang, very complimentary. Such a nice guy! Anyway, here’s the video. Warning: I sing the song.
