Here’s some church drum cam footage! This is the end of “Revelation Song” which is like an epic power ballad (I really like this one). I usually video myself in order to critique and improve. Can you find at least a couple errors? I can…. :)
Here’s a bit of random drumset noodling I recorded with my phone. I record stuff pretty often in order to listen back and find the warts that I can improve. Sorry for the bad audio, I’ll upgrade to use the recorded sounds soon.
Drumset freestyle practice with the click -Bill Bachman I haven’t posted in a long long time! This is just my phone sitting next to the kit that I put up for my own critique. I think I’m about to do some projects ...

Drumline 8 on a hand @ 250 bpm -Marcus HS 2018 drumworkout.com
In trying to figure out my youtube url (I'm not a teenager so it's a struggle) I found this from last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaxJUBfgeZI
It's the greatest drumline hit ever, 8 on a hand! (Actually 8-8-16.) We kept bumping up the metronome and ended up at 250. It's all about using the free stro...

Here’s my “can’t believe it’s not a blast beat” (sort-of) from today’s practice. Herd of Instinct live 3/16/19 at the Prophet Bar in Dallas. C’mon out if you like instrumental musical adventure.
This is a set up for a good time! I was just a guest artist for S. F. Austin High School percussion concert down in the Houston area. They played really well and it was a fun & challenging gig with lots of reading. (And Tom Sawyer too actually, no reading required in that one!)

Cool story behind the recording of this song: Part of my birthday present a couple years ago was a trip to Boston to visit Vic Firth & Zildjian factories and pick out a whole set of cymbals for a trade in. I got K Con 20” bounce ride, 19” crash ride, 15” & 17” crashes and 14” hats. I was so excited that I set them all up and recorded an improvised song form of sorts with them and then sent it to Mark Cook who then wrote this whole tune around it. Both Spoke of Shadows albums have a song that was totally composed over improvised drums.
Are you familiar with Spoke of Shadows? Spoke of Shadows is a collaboration between Warr-guitarist and instrumentalist Mark Cook and percussionist, inventor, columnist and clinician Bill Bachman. Mark said of this project: "Our goal was to create a hybrid progressive music that covers a wide range of moods and styles. No rules!". This is the song "Pendulum Swings" from their latest album Spoke Of Shadows II, released last year on Djam Karet's Firepool Records. What do you think of this song?

Interesting answer to an interview of sorts from earlier today: "The mechanics of drumming tend to revolve around the battle of nature –vs-- man. The philosophies in the Extreme Hands Makeover on drumworkout.com are all about minimizing our manipulation of the stick in order to maximize what nature will do perfectly every time. When we do this there’s always a bell curve in improvement in terms of musicality, flow, groove, consistency, speed and chops. Once diving into the makeover one should expect new insights on drumming mechanics and practice strategies which will make for immediate gains in the fore mentioned qualities, improved results in their practice time, reduced strain on their hands and some drumming inspiration through tangible progress!"

drumworkout.com The only place you get to practice with a pro & take online drum lessons with world famous drumset clinician, Bill Bachman. Your hands are in good hands.
I just answered a question about lesson formats: "I do a lot of teaching in different formats, there are in person lessons locally in Dallas, Skype lessons with people all over the world, and then there's drumworkout.com with streaming lessons and workouts (which do a heck of a lot more good than just a lesson), and some books which I have published.
In person lessons are great as I can play along with the student the whole time (a lot of what I do focuses on hand technique). With skype I model and the student plays it back--I tweak them until they're doing everything perfectly, then send them off to get tons of reps to solidify and see them a week later. It works great, I have (& have had) many students whose hands ended up absolutely amazing from skype lessons.
I use drumworkout.com (and sometimes my books in addition) to go along with the lessons (live & skype). The student can watch the lesson there (which saves time in the actual lesson) and can then do workouts that I assign out of the Extreme Hands Makeover. When students take a first lesson after having done some drumworkout stuff ahead of time I'm always amazed by the number of common mistakes that they're not making--it definitely works way better than simply watching a lesson from a DVD or such.
So yes, there are multiple ways to go about it and multiple ways that have been proven to work very well."
Had a great question from a Bill Bachman's Drumworkout.com subscriber on the forum about pushing past the red line to achieve speed. To paraphrase, "I know I'm supposed to get the perfect reps, but is pushing past the red line time well spent? or will doing so just make me worse?" There’s a judgement call here for sure. 90% of the time I’m going with the “lots of perfect reps under the red line using the next faster tempo’s technique,” but occasionally it’s good to just push through and get it done. Sometimes this can force you to figure out how to get out of your own way to achieve it, however people who are all into this though generally practice wrong and never get the desired results or even injure themselves. So yeah, use your judgement and push through occasionally. Good luck!

Neil Peart 1992 Drum Clinic - Full Video (with A/V sync issue fixed) 78 minutes
So, this exists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DXnd-B-t6s I thought he'd never done a clinic! His set up made sense here, the right drum heights/angles. I think the post Gruber set-up after he went back to matched caused most of his hand/shoulder problems; he left the drums all too high & flat (which catered to the upside down left hand) so he was left hitting everything with wrists "doggy-paw'd" and shoulders hunched. Totally unnecessary injuries & so easily preventable.
Here is the complete 78 minute video of the 1992 Neil Peart Drum Clinic in Irvine CA with no sync issue (unless one of you finds something else! haha). Some ...

Quality 3’s can be a source of happiness. Here’s a relatively quick path to happy 3’s:
A QUICK LESSON FOR FASTER ROLLS!
To develop the forearm pump for faster rolls try this unconventional and weird trick which isolates the forearm pumping motion, do so with one arm/hand/stick at a time and later combine them:
Hold the stick about 3" from the bead and with your fingers pin the back end of the stick under your forearm. Make sure that your palm is not quite touching the stick because then you can't apply pressure from the fingers and you may be tempted to use the wrist and not the forearm (plus this is the position you'll end up using anyway when actually playing it). Make sure your hand is at about a 45 degree angle and that the thumb is on the topside 45 where in can apply the downward pressure/set up the finger control. Note that there will be no gap between the thumb and hand because the thumb wants that real estate on the topside of the stick (not literal direct top like in French because then we'd lose the use of the palm in back).
Now with the wrist & hand held in that static position and the thumb pushing down/fingers pulling the stick up against the forearm "play" 8th notes on the pad using your elbow as the fulcrum. It's a dead stroke at the bead (this is not the point) and you'll probably hear the stick briefly pop off the forearm and snap back "clicking" against the forearm with each 8th note stroke about a 32nd note behind the 8th. Don't turn this into a science project or intentionally activate fingers to play this rhythm, just focus on forearm pump with constant pressure from the fingers and no wrist. Do this for about 2-4 minutes, then slide the stick down to its normal position and play buzz or open doubles, just DON'T CHANGE THE ARM/HAND MOTION. Go back and forth with these until your body has learned how to pump the forearms for faster rolls instead of forcing the wrist to struggle on its own. (Unless you want tendonitis, if you do then continue playing faster rolls as flat to the drum as possible with no arm, German grip and squeezing the thumb on the side of the stick.)
Videos make this stuff easier, if interested it's steps 11 & 12 (for buzz and open) in my Extreme Hands Makeover on drumworkout.com. Good luck!
