Sepsis is the body's life-threatening response to infection, affecting 1.7 million people and taking 350,000 adult lives in the U.S. every year. When Hosanna was whisked away to the level 4 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at CHRISTUS Children’s, she weighed just 3.9 pounds, and her parents, Abby and Victor, unexpectedly entered the world of the NICU. From the initial shock of having a premature or medically fragile baby to the eventual joy and relief as their little feisty girl progressed and grew stronger. The NICU team was crucial in providing medical expertise and emotional support. Hosanna and her family wanted to give back. They recently reunited with one of their beloved NICU nurses, Jen. They celebrated with a book donation for our   Books with Babies read-a-thon, teaming up with the San Antonio community and donating over 300 books!

The CHRISTUS Kids Clinic - Coushatta will provide expanded physical, occupational, and speech therapy services to patients from newborn to age 21 in central and north Louisiana. Our dedicated Associates and Physicians are eager to start serving our communities with the highest care and compassion.

After a difficult first birth, Ashlie hoped for a smoother pregnancy with her next child. She struggled to find a provider for her son, Huxley Christopher, but was lucky to be referred to our certified nurse midwife Tammy Huff. Although Ashlie initially wanted a home birth, traveling fiancé led her to choose CHRISTUS Santa Rosa- New Braunfels, where she found the nurses who delivered Huxley to be 'nothing short of amazing.'
Despite breastfeeding her daughter for 25 months with minimal support, Ashlie faced new challenges with Huxley, including latching issues and overproduction. She had 400 oz of milk in the freezer from letdown alone. She was connected with lactation consultant Shawna Baker who helped by answering her questions and showing different feeding positions.
"I remember crying because I was so overwhelmed, and she just reassured me that every baby is different," Ashlie said. "That helped me a lot because breastfeeding journeys are not the same for every child."
Today, Huxley is five months old and thriving. Ashlie said she is grateful for the support and feels the care she received was crucial in overcoming her challenges.

We are proud to announce Dr. Tiffany Egbe as the recipient of the CHRISTUS Equity Advocate Leadership Awards 2024. This prestigious award honors an individual with exceptional leadership and commitment to health equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Dr. Egbe was a founding member of the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Diversity Committee, championing diverse cultural and religious celebrations and developing a HEDI curriculum to eliminate healthcare inequities. Her work as co-chair of our Ethics Committee enhances our understanding of patients from diverse backgrounds, improving our care teams' responses in complex situations. She actively recruits and trains volunteers for East Texas CASA and serves on the board of Refuge International, promoting medical mission trips to Guatemala and telehealth during COVID-19, among other opportunities to advance our mission.

We're thrilled to share that Dr. Julie Haygood, CHRISTUS Health's Clinical Informatics Medical Director and hospitalist in Tyler, was one of just 10,012 female runners worldwide participating in the historic 2024 Marathon Pour Tous (Marathon for All) in Paris! 🏃‍♀️🌍
Dr. Haygood was overjoyed when she was selected in the lottery for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! On August 10th, she ran the same 26.2-mile course as the Olympians, just hours before the Closing Ceremony of the Summer Games.
Dr. Haygood took up running to break a sedentary lifestyle and found a passion that took her all the way to the Olympics, "This wasn't about setting a personal best. It's Paris at night—a dream come true!"

During we're proud to celebrate our community health centers all around CHRISTUS Health, like CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic in Houston's east end. This clinic provides primary care, mental health counseling, and immunizations to uninsured and underserved patients. In 2023, the clinic had over 31,000 patient encounters and provided $4.7 million in prescription assistance. According to Sister Rosanne Popp, M.D., Medical Director, St. Mary's Clinic cares for "those who fall through the cracks of the cracks." As well as CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic has served Dickinson, Texas, for 35 years with primary care and mental health services. In 2023, the clinic provided over $920,000 in prescription assistance.

Xander was always quiet, even before birth. He was assumed to be the silent type until Xander turned two. His parents began questioning his speech delays and pushed for a solution.

Xander was brought to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Beeville, where his life changed forever. Speech-Language Pathologist Rachel Greb introduced “the talker.” The device allowed Xander to communicate verbally and express his emotions. He advanced quickly after receiving progressive technology.

The access to services in Beeville has provided Xander and his family life changing care. He continues to use the device to extend his vocabulary and bloom his personality.

Close to 100 CHRISTUS and area school athletic trainers from our East Texas ministries attended the annual CHRISTUS Sports Medicine Symposium to gear up for the upcoming fall season 🏈🏃‍♀️🏐⚽️
Topics covered included the latest concussion research, heat illness prevention, emergency treatments, supplemental safety, dental injuries, and dermatology in sports medicine.
This year, we also partnered with the Longview Fire Department for instruction on vital equipment removal, spine boarding, and Narcan administration training. Our CHRISTUS Flight For Life team also provided essential training on setting up perimeters and safely loading patients in the event of a catastrophic injury on the field. 🚁

Congratulations to CHRISTUS Children’s for being recognized again as a Magnet-designated facility, achieving the gold standard in nursing excellence! First awarded in 2018, we received re-designation they are one of only 52 children’s hospitals globally to achieve this honor!
Magnet designation, awarded by the ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program, measures the strength and quality of nursing programs. CHRISTUS Children’s is the first and only freestanding hospital in San Antonio dedicated to children and pregnant women, and the only one in south Texas with this designation.

Splish splash, our CHRISTUS Kids Clinic was having a BLAST🌊💦☀️! We celebrated the summer season with some fun in the sun! Our team designed activities that combined play with therapeutic objectives. Patients worked on their therapy goals while cooling off from this summer heat in the water.

We celebrated the grand opening of the new CHRISTUS Emergency Center – Texarkana with a ribbon-cutting and blessing ceremony. Over 200 guests got a sneak peek of the 12,000-square-foot facility. This facility will provide nearly 40 healthcare jobs for the community and will be staffed by board-certified physicians and nurses who specialize in serving the emergent needs of patients. Construction on the more than $17 million building began in March 2023 and features 24-hour emergency services with 12 treatment rooms, advanced imaging, and onsite laboratory services for easy access to care.

CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances recently partnered with The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine to sign a new affiliation agreement, enhancing the educational landscape for primary care medical students in East Texas. The signing ceremony took place on June 25 at the Wisenbaker Conference Center, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler. Starting January 2025, medical students will begin 12-month rotations focused on primary care at CHRISTUS hospitals and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic locations.

In May 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agent Christopher Alaniz suffered severe injuries in a high-speed accident while on duty. Today, we were honored to welcome him back for a heartwarming reunion with the incredible physicians and nurses who saved his life. After initial treatment at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Kleberg, he was transferred to the trauma department at CHRISTUS Spohn- Shoreline for several critical procedures. Dr. John Adamski, his trauma surgeon, shared, "Seeing him today in full uniform makes me smile. We don't always see that, even in the best recoveries."
Agent Alaniz's remarkable recovery and return to work as a CBP agent highlights the exceptional care at CHRISTUS Spohn. One year later, he is eager to reunite with the heroes who played a crucial role in his recovery journey.
