Most Big Bend Ranch State Park campsites and trails will be closed October 25- 28 as TPWD Wildlife Biologists continue efforts to restore the park’s native Desert Bighorn Sheep population. Biologists will count Desert Bighorn Sheep via helicopter survey and reduce non-native aoudad populations via lethal means. Access to Closed Canyon will be unavailable on October 25th and 26th. Access to Hoodoos TH, Rio Grande put-ins, and the Contrabando Trail System will be open for the survey's duration.

Non-native aoudad compete directly with native Desert Bighorn Sheep for resources and habitat, transmit diseases via shared water sources, and obstruct natural regeneration among Desert Bighorn Sheep herds. Please see the closure map for details. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Texas Effort To Kill 500 Deer Hits A Major Snag "I may be broke before it's over, but I don't want to kill my deer."

Eastland County Deputy Killed in the Line of Duty....

At approximately 9:00 PM on Friday, July 21, 2023, Deputies with the Eastland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic fight in progress at a residence on Hwy 183 between Cisco and Rising Star. Deputy David Bosecker arrived on scene first and immediately began receiving gunfire from the suspect. Deputy Bosecker was struck and fatally wounded. Other units arriving were able to apprehend the suspect and no one else was injured. The suspect was taken to Stephens County Jail where he was charged with Capitol Murder. This is an active investigation being led by the Texas Rangers.

Deputy Bosecker had been in law enforcement for over 21 years and was a master peace officer. He began his law enforcement career in Wise County as a deputy then transitioning to Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. He would later become a Game Warden for Texas Parks and Wildlife. And Police Officer for Comanche PD. He finally ended up at Eastland County as a deputy in 2021 and he also worked part time for Cisco PD as a marine enforcement officer.

Bass Pro Tour veteran Alton Jones and his wife, Jimmye Sue, were involved in an auto accident Wednesday while driving to the Detroit area for General Tire Stage Six Presented by John Deere Utility Vehicles on Lake St. Clair. The Joneses were driving south from Saginaw Bay, Michigan – where Jones was pre-practicing for Stage Seven in early August – when the accident happened, causing their truck to overturn and Alton’s boat to be ejected from the trailer.

Alton was uninjured except for what he describes as “bumps and bruises.” Jimmye Sue sustained a broken sternum and other minor injuries, but is otherwise well and is currently receiving treatment in an area hospital. Jones’ truck is totaled, and his competition boat is “severely damaged at best” according to Jones.

Jones is currently unclear about his status for Stage Six, which starts on Saturday, but has not ruled out the possibility of competing out of a borrowed boat when Group B qualifying competition begins on Sunday, June 25.

“Right now the tournament is secondary, we’re all just thankful to be here – God was looking out for us,” Jones said.

TPWD temporarily closes some areas to fishing on Texas coast due to widespread freezing temperatures.
