Let’s go Simone and Team USA!

Have you been watching the Olympics? We have been gushing over our fellow Texan, Simone Biles, and the Women’s Gymnastics team! From dominating the world stage to inspiring millions with their resilience and grace, Team USA are true champions in every sense of the word!

Simone Biles isn’t just a gymnastics legend; she’s a beacon of resilience and strength.

Seeing Simone compete is truly amazing; she takes on any challenge with courage and grace both on and off the mat. Although we are awestruck by Simone’s brilliance and talent in the Olympics, we are even more inspired by the way she bravely advocates for herself and other survivors.

In 2016, Simone and hundreds of other gymnasts came forward about the s*xual violence they endured as children by gymnastics programs across the United States. Until that point, the abusers never faced any repercussions for their violence. In fact, many institutions meant to protect gymnasts were aware of the abuse happening but did nothing to stop it.

In 2021, Simone and several of her former teammates testified before Congress about the abuse they endured and how the systems meant to protect gymnasts enabled abusers.

Survivors of abuse face overwhelming obstacles when fighting for justice and upholding their dignity. Standing up for yourself and speaking out about the injustices you’ve endured is terrifying and retraumatizing, and sometimes it’s easier to stay quiet. It shouldn’t have to be that way. Survivors shouldn’t have to fight so hard for justice or accountability.

The long, tiring journey to healing and justice hasn’t deterred Simone. She knew that systems needed to be held accountable to prevent abuse from happening again. She bravely stood up to those systems and valiantly demanded change.

Simone: thank you for being a powerful voice for survivors and for your steadfast determination to hold systems accountable. Thank you for leading by example and taking a break when you needed it. Survivors bear so much weight on their shoulders and continue to carry trauma. It’s okay to take a break, and it’s okay to prioritize your own mental health and your future over other’s expectations.

Tuesday was the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, an annual day of recognition and awareness of human trafficking.

Although we are grateful for the heightened awareness of trafficking on this day, to truly support survivors and prevent human trafficking, we need to raise awareness year-round.

That's why we launched the Liberty in Labor campaign earlier this year; to equip you with critical information about the realities of human trafficking, and the way it's perpetuated in our community. By teaching North Texans what trafficking looks like, we are all more equipped to prevent trafficking and protect our community.

Earlier this month, police in Princeton, TX, uncovered a labor trafficking ring right here in North Texas. Fifteen women were discovered living in dire conditions and being forced to work as computer programmers.

These survivors are from India and came to the United States under false promises of an internship opportunity to learn Java scripting.

At Mosaic, we know that situations like this are all too common. We often work with survivors from all over the world who were recruited to come to the United States on false job promises. Traffickers promise victims a life-changing opportunity to earn high wages, but when victims arrive in the U.S., those promises crumble.

In labor trafficking, traffickers make victims work against their will, often for little or no pay. Traffickers may use debt bo***ge, document manipulation, physical violence, and threats of deportation to control victims and keep them in exploitative situations.

Immigrant survivors of human trafficking need immigration relief to rebuild their lives. That's where the T-visa comes in. The T-visa is a temporary immigration benefit that enables survivors of trafficking to remain in the United States.

There is a cap of 5,000 T-visas available each year for . The U.S. has never reached that cap. If fails to reach the 5,000 cap, the T-visas will be lost forever.

We are urging USCIS to adjudicate the 13,449 T-visa applications pending and reach the 5,000 T-visa cap for FY2024.

THIS JUST IN! A HUGE VICTORY FOR SURVIVORS! 🎉

Today, the Supreme Court determined that domestic violence offenders DO NOT have a constitutional right to own or possess fi****ms. Mosaic Family Services is relieved and grateful that the Court chose to protect survivors in the U.S. vs. Rahimi case.

This landmark decision upholds a federal law that prohibits individuals subject to a domestic violence protective order* from legally possessing a firearm and protects survivors’ ability to obtain legally enforceable protections from their abusers.

From Mosaic’s decades of working with domestic violence survivors, we are keenly aware of the risk fi****ms have for those in an abusive relationship. According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the presence of a gun in abusive relationships increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

Today's ruling is an incredible victory for survivors, their loved ones, and communities across the country. Thank you to everyone who tirelessly advocated for survivors and raised awareness of the dangers of fi****ms in domestic violence situations.

*A protective order is a court order that a domestic violence survivor can obtain for protection from their abuser. Protective orders prevent abusers from hurting, threatening, or harassing an individual and/or their children; coming close to an individual or their family, home, workplace, child’s daycare, or school; and, or carrying a gun, even with a license.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States and the enduring fight for freedom and equality. As we honor this pivotal moment in history, we must also recognize how the legacy of slavery and systemic racism continues to shape our society, particularly in the realm of gender-based violence.

The brutal history of slavery established a foundation of racial and gender inequality that persists to this day. Black women, in particular, face disproportionately high rates of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other violent crime.

Racial stereotypes and systemic biases contribute to the silencing of Black survivors and the failure to provide them with adequate support. The legacy of dehumanization and exploitation during slavery still echoes in today's society, manifesting in the form of racialized violence and discrimination.

Together, we can honor the spirit of Juneteenth by striving for a future where freedom and justice are truly available to all.
