Doing voiceover work is easy, right?

I mean, all you have to do is read.

It’s not like you have to actually act. You don’t have to learn lines. You get to have your script right there in front of you. Nobody can see you, so you can just kick back and read.

Before I started learning about being a voiceover, that’s kind of what I thought.

It turns out that, like most things, it is a lot harder than it appears!

Being a voiceover artist is not just about reading. It's about using your voice to bring the words of the script to life as if they are your own emotions and experiences. It truly is acting.

This requires a lot of practice to refine things like pronunciation, articulation, breathing, tone, pacing, inflection, intention -- the list goes on. All of which you need to perfect before you even think about stepping in front of a microphone.

All of this is particularly important when it comes to voicing for eLearning.

For an Instructional Designer, it is imperative that the voice of your eLearning program has the ability to truly connect with your listener, or all that work you did building the program is for nothing. If your learners can’t connect, they can’t learn.

It takes a lot to hold the attention of a learner, especially if they don’t necessarily want to be there. You definitely want someone who knows what they are doing to bring the words of your eLearning program to life and make them engaging for your audience.

So, when you are considering voiceover artists for your eLearning project, make sure to choose someone who has the skills, experience, and passion to do justice to your program and truly connect with your learners.

As a voiceover artist for eLearning, one of the most important aspects of my job is to connect with the learner in a way that helps them really absorb the information. Choosing the correct tone for the material and the learner is crucial, and there are a few strategies I use to make sure that I'm hitting the mark.

First and foremost, I always make sure to thoroughly review the material before recording. This helps me get a sense of the intended audience and the overall tone that will be most effective in conveying the information. For example, I need to know if I’m supposed to be an “over-the-shoulder co-worker,” an “industrial expert,” or a “friendly manager.” Each of these scenarios required a completely different approach to the material.

Another more technical aspect is paying attention to pacing and inflection. It's important to strike a balance between speaking clearly and slowly enough to be easily understood, but not so slowly that the listener becomes bored or disengaged. Inflection is also key – using variations in pitch and tone can help emphasize important points and keep the listener's attention focused on the most relevant information.

Finally, I always strive to bring a sense of authenticity and enthusiasm to my recordings. I believe that listeners can sense when a speaker is genuinely interested and engaged in the material, and this can help build a connection and make the learning experience more enjoyable. Learners who enjoy the experience are more likely to be successful.

If you know an eLearning Professional who might be looking for a great partner for their next project, I would appreciate a warm introduction!

In the meantime, I’d love to hear about any eLearning experiences you’ve had, good or bad. See you in the comments!

Did you know that you can establish credibility and trust in your company's marketing materials or digital content simply by hiring a professional voiceover (VO) artist?

A professional VO can elevate your content by providing a clear, polished, and engaging recording. Here are some of the benefits that a professional VO can bring:

🎙 No background noises: A professional VO has access to a quiet recording space and equipment that can filter out background noises. This ensures that your audience can focus on your message without any distractions.

🎙 No distracting mouth noises and plosives: A professional VO is trained to deliver a smooth and consistent vocal performance without any distracting mouth noises or plosives (the popping sound that occurs when certain consonants are pronounced). This ensures that your message is delivered clearly and effectively.

🎙 Consistent volume levels: A pro VO knows how to control their voice and maintain consistent volume levels throughout your content. This is important for ensuring that your audience can hear every word and that the overall listening experience is pleasant and comfortable.

🎙 Pro VOs invest in the absolute best recording equipment: A professional VO artist takes their craft seriously and invests in high-quality recording equipment. This ensures that the sound quality of your content is top-notch and that your brand is represented in the best possible light.

By hiring a professional VO, you can ensure that your marketing materials and digital content are presented in a professional and polished manner. This can help establish credibility and trust in your brand, leading to increased engagement and sales.

Do you have a project coming up that you need a Pro VO for? Send me a message, and let's talk!

Most voice actors, at one point or another, were told that they have a “great voice”. (In this age of authenticity, the definition of a “great voice” is a subject for a whole different post.)

I was thinking about how having a “great voice” is really the bare minimum needed to be successful as a voice actor. Taking that bare minimum “great voice” and getting all the requisite training and education on how to use that instrument to the best of your ability is really the ground floor for creating a successful voiceover business.

Once you have that foundation, it is crucial to be a reliable business partner to your clients.

To me, this means:

📍 Consistency: Meeting deadlines and delivering on promises.

📍 Communication: Keeping my clients informed and being responsive to their needs and concerns.

📍 Flexibility: Being able to adapt to changing circumstances and finding creative solutions to challenges.

📍 Quality: Delivering high-quality work that meets or exceeds expectations.

📍 Honesty and transparency: Being open and honest about my capabilities and limitations.

📍 Professionalism: Maintaining a professional demeanor and approach to business.

📍 Continuous improvement: Constantly looking for ways to improve my skills to benefit my clients.

Being a reliable business partner is at the core of my mission for Jennifer Lanham Voiceover. If you are looking for voiceover services and want to partner with someone who truly cares, let’s talk!

Have you ever taken a training course on your computer?

By now, I think most of us have.

As a Voiceover provider for , I'm always trying to connect with my learner and help them to feel supported.

Some things I like to keep in mind while narrating are:

💡 Don't talk down, condescend, or act like a "know-it-all." I am an ally to my learner.

💡 Watch my pace. If I go too quickly, the learner won't catch the lesson. If I go too slowly, they will be annoyed or bored to tears.

💡 Lift the material off of the page. Don't sound boring or monotone. That is a quick way to have the learner tune out.

💡 Keep a consistent volume throughout the modules. Nothing is more frustrating than having to turn the volume up and down constantly or having your eardrums blasted when a new section starts.

Are there any other things you think I should keep in mind? I'd love to hear some other ideas!

I keep hearing about how AI voices sound more realistic than ever.

I agree, however, they still don’t sound HUMAN.

While there are tons of great uses for AI voices, I wonder: Can AI effectively replace human voices in eLearning?

Here are my thoughts. I’d love to hear yours!

High-quality, realistic AI voiceover is very expensive to produce, and simulating emotion takes a long time and a lot of programming.

When a script is more than a few words long, it quickly becomes obvious that the voice is not human.

Learners do not connect with AI voices. As soon as they realize it is fake, they disengage. Some are even outright annoyed by it and stop listening altogether.

One of the most important aspects of successful eLearning is for learners to connect with the material. AI voices lack emotion, connection, and the ability to lift the words off the page and make them meaningful to the listener.

What do you think? Is there room for AI voices in eLearning, or should it be left to us humans?

As entrepreneurs, we voiceovers tend to be fiercely independent and handle as many things on our own as possible. Sometimes, though, we just need to call upon an expert (or two) and when it comes to keeping our voices in tip-top shape, we don't mess around!

I want to thank Tor Spence (VOICE FIT) and Nic Redman Voice for being so generous with their time and attention in meeting with me last week. They provided me with some extremely helpful information, tips, and action items to help keep me "in voice" for a long time to come.

I can't thank you enough, Tor and Nic!
