Hot surface ignition test
In a recently settled case, the issue of hot surface ignition of gasoline became a subject of contentious debate. Although it is generally accepted that gasoline will NOT ignite on a hot surface, opposing experts and attorneys contested my opinions without performing their own testing. In this video, I heat a piece of steel to approximately 1000 degrees F and pipette gasoline onto the surface. This temperature is well above the temperature of the subject exhaust. As it cools to temperature in the range of the operating temperature of the exhaust in question, I pour the contents of the can onto the surface. Finally, I light the can that contained the gasoline confirming its contents. It is admittedly not the most scientific test but, when faced with court imposed time constraints, we do what we can.
