Wool Hat Creative is a company dedicated to wild expression and beautiful stories through film, writing, photography, and art with the added mission of protecting where we play outdoors and making the world a better place.
We're excited to announce that the short adventure documentary, "The Avalanche Hunter", is playing in the Breck Film Fest 2023 on September 23rd! Breck Film Fest is listed as one of the top 20 festivals in the US.
We're also having our European and French premiere at Femmes en Montagne in Annecy, France in November!
In this film, you get a look behind the scenes into the often invisible world of avalanche control and avalanche professionals. The story follows Roz Reynolds, an “avalanche hunter” and certified badass, who is not only blazing trails in her field and keeping the public safe in the mountains, but also laying first tracks on backcountry slopes, on the USA Ice Climbing team, and more.
We've been accepted into 5 festivals and counting now: Les Boise Film Festival, the Backcountry Film Festival , Breckenridge Film Festival, Horsetooth Fest in Fort Collins, and Femmes en Montagne Festival in France.
This has been such a wild ride and rewarding project for us and director, Philip Hüffeldt, to work on, especially in elevating an amazing female voice in the outdoors, let alone just an amazing human, the one and only, Roz Reynolds.
Couldn't have done without the amazing film crew.
Producers/writers: Doug Howell, Kristen Haldeman Kauffman

Join us in celebrating International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
We can’t possibly represent the immeasurable value and diversity of all Indigenous Peoples worldwide in one day, or one post. Indigenous people, culture, and wisdom so have much to offer the world. That’s why we think all should celebrate and elevate indigenous ways of life and indigenous peoples.
And there is no climate or environmental progress without environmental justice. We will never solve these issues without all people, especially the wisdom and spirit of indigenous peoples who have suffered great injustice and historically been left out of environmental movements and achievements, but are now leading the charge in so many ways.
Pictured above (left > right) Deenaalee Hodgdon (), Ean Thomas Tafoya (), Noe Orgaz (.orgaz), and others at a climate rally in Denver outside of 2020. Hodgdon is a q***r Deg Xit’an Athabaskan and Supiaq person from the villages of Gitr’ingithchagg (Anvik) and Qinuyang (South Naknek), Alaska. They are Executive Director of On The Land Media and a commercial fisherman on the F/V Cozy Ray.
Tafoya is the founder of Headwaters Protectors and his indigenous ancestors are Jicarilla Apache and Ohkay Owingeh from Southern Colorado and New Mexico. Tafoya is a person of many talents and accomplishments including running for Mayor in Denver in 2023. .
Please follow and support the work that these amazing people are doing!
Please support and celebrate indigenous peoples today. Links for some suggested causes and resources in bio!
Land acknowledgement: we are posting this from the traditional lands of the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, and Ute Peoples. We honor the indigenous communities - past, present, and future - who have stewarded this land throughout the generations.

Hi Colorado friends, please immediately contact your Colorado state senator to vote yes on HB23-1309 for film incentives in CO. It's being voted on in the Senate Appropriations Committee by as early as 8 am tomorrow and it doesn't seem like we have the votes!!!
Use this link https://leg.colorado.gov/house-district-map to find your legislator and call AND email and urge them to vote yes on HB23-1309 for film incentives in Colorado. This is closest we've ever come and it's critical for a vibrant film industry in CO!
This is especially important if your Senator is on the Appropriations Committee, such as Senators Bob Gardner, Barbara Kirkmeyer and/or Rachel Zinzenger: https://leg.colorado.gov/committees/appropriations/2023-regular-session
Strong film incentives is a good economic decision will support a vibrant entertainment and film production industry in Colorado worth millions in revenue. Colorado does not have much, if any, incentives compared states like Georgia, New Mexico, Louisiana, etc. States with strong film incentives see big productions and millions in revenue and this is how the media production/entertainment industry grows in states.
Colorado has so much to offer like plentiful sunshine and diverse settings and environments, but most production goes to other states with better incentives.
Please help by urging your state senator to support this bill!!! Thank you.
Here's the bill: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb23-1309

We're excited to release our (full) short documentary “Snow Rangers” online after it did a tour around the world with the 2021 Backcountry Film Festival!
This film was no small feat as our small, but mighty, crew followed these rangers for several days on skis, snowshoes, and more as they showed us around their corner of the Colorado mountains. We battled altitude, changing snow and weather conditions, the beautiful and harrowing mountain passes, and the limitations of our body and fitness to tell this story. We hope that you give this educational film a watch!
