Along with his trio, bassist Matt Smiley continues to explore the music of jazz legend Charlie Haden this Thursday, June 23, as part of his Nocturne Artist in Residency. Matt hopes to bring Haden’s vocal and melodic style of bass playing to the stage, while also highlighting the musician’s role as an outspoken anti-war pacifist by performing some of his political compositions like “We Shall Overcome” and “The People United Will Never Be Defeated.” Enjoy this recent clip from Matt’s residency, then make a reservation to enjoy his trio live on our stage.
For Jazz Appreciation Month, we asked pianist Jack Dunlevie about his favorite memory performing at Nocturne. He said: “One of my favorites was the first night of my Oscar Peterson residency in February 2021. It was coming off a long, difficult stretch of not being able to perform due to the pandemic, and being back on stage in front of an eager audience with my close friends and collaborators was a great healing moment.” We remember this show, and this moment was healing for us, as well, Jack. Cheers 🥂 Along with Kevin Matthews on drums and Patrick McDevitt on bass, Jack is currently exploring another golden-era classic, “Live at the Pershing Lounge” by Ahmad Jamal, Wednesday evenings through May. Enjoy this teaser from his current residency at Nocturne!
Catch Taylor Clay Saxophone and his quartet on the Nocturne stage every Thursday through the end of April as they perform a new series of Taylor’s original compositions. With thought-provoking melodies and modern harmonic nuance, these compositions are a culmination of his experiences and influences as a modern musician in Denver. Taylor will be joined by an excellent collection of forward-thinking Denver jazz artists, including Jack Dunlevie on piano, Seth Lewis on bass and B.K. Khan on drums. We hope to see you on Thursday nights, but in the meantime, enjoy this clip from one of Taylor’s performances at Nocturne in January. (Instagram 📹 : @taylorclaysax)
