October 18th, 2023 marks 35 years since the release of the multi-platinum, award winning third album from Detroit Songstress Anita Baker. The album proved to be an integral part of Baker’s recording career, as it was her highest charting album, soaring to the #1 spot on both the Billboard R&B and Pop charts (knocking U2’s “Rattle & Hum” out of the coveted position).

“Giving You The Best That I Got” was the follow-up to the widely successful breakthrough album “Rapture”, which had made Baker a bona-fide Superstar, selling nearly 10 million copies world-wide; in her own words “Giving You The Best That I Got” was “the tough one”. The album contained three successful singles, which propelled the album to sell over 5 million copies, which was a surprise to Baker herself. “I didn’t expect anyone to buy it”, she once said. The release also afforded the Songstress three Grammy Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards, and an American Music Award.

During the tour, Anita suffered her first miscarriage, and it was over. Even with that tragedy, the music on the album continued to live on.

“Giving You The Best That I Got” was a success. As with “Rapture” and every album thereafter, Anita served as Executive Producer, overseeing every aspect of the albums development, while longtime friend and former bandmate, Michael J. Powell, served as Producer on the project. The album featured many musical luminaries such as; George Duke, Nathan East, Paul Jackson, Jr, Paulinho da Costa, Bobby Lyle, Sir Gant and Paul Riser. Two music videos were produced, one for the title track, and the other for “Just Because”. Throughout the recording, Anita’s voice remained consistently beautiful, textured, and inviting.

“Giving You The Best That I Got” remains an important chapter in Anita Baker’s musical career, as it gave her one of her most beloved signature tunes, which encouraged the world to give their best in life and love.

By Order of the Peaky Blinders This photograph is an unapologetic nod to Steven Knight’s hugely popular 1920s British gangster series Peaky Blinders. With satanic chimneys belching smoke and cobbles awash with industrial grime, the period drama brought hellish industrial UK into our living rooms but did it with an admirable swagger and aesthetic genius. The anomaly of Peaky Blinders is that cinematography made hell look attractive.   Audiences around the world found themselves engaged by a new street subculture and sympathising with men with totally disposable moral fibre. Birmingham in the UK became known around the world for what it was portrayed to be like 100 years ago rather than what it is like now. That’s quite a trick.   My creative leaning was to twist the narrative a little. Cillian Murphy owned every scene in the series with a mesmerising intensity, but what if the leader of the gang was a woman? Most of the women in the series were depicted either as objects of lust or familial loyalty rather than necessarily agents of their own destiny. They faded into the scenery as often happens in mobster shows.   In my mindset there was only girl to go this job - the irrepressible force of nature that is Cara Delevingne. She owns this scene, just as Cillian did in the series, and that says it all. She is a national treasure and we are lucky to work with her as often as we do. As I often say to those that ask, “It’s her eyes”.   There was a big cast that day and everyone played their role. It only takes one person to kill the vibe and that evening everyone did a grand Peaky Blinders job. Maybe some of my extras have missed their vocation in life. We look forward to unveiling this image, alongside others from this shoot, at Maddox Gallery’s new space in Berkeley Street when our solo show starts on the 27th of October.
