For the last five years, BUF of MI has partnered with Wayne State University @waynestate to implement the Silas Norman Medical Scholars program or Future Docs for Tomorrow:SINORMS program which addresses the need for more underserved and underrepresented persons in the field of medicine. The program honors Dr. Silas Norman who was a pioneer in the field of Medicine in the Detroit Community. The program is delivered in the form of a summer academy, monthly workshops, and research and lab opportunities. More than 150 youth have been served by the program in the form of Cohorts. Currently the program is in its 6th cohort where success is measured by the high number of youth committing to continue their education in the field of medicine.
The Black United Fund (BUF) of MI in partnership with IKEA Canton @ikea launched a youth programming initiative designed to teach Detroit area middle and high school students about creating and running a sustainable retail business. BUF of MI is on a mission of supporting, developing, and implementing impactful youth empowerment programs through collaborative partnerships for the underserved and underrepresented in the community. The Youth Retail Business Program says it found the perfect partner in IKEA Canton.
