Here’s a fun question: How did you discover Independent Wrestling? As a kid I knew there were smaller federations from the magazine coverage, but I assumed they were remnants of the territory days. It wasn’t until I was watching WWF Saturday morning wrestling in 1994 that I first saw a commercial advertising Midwest Territorial Wrestling (MTW) in Taylor, Michigan featuring the International Freedom Fighters of Chris Carter and Mohammed Saad. It was very low budget but the fact it aired during WWF programming gave it instant credibility and I was obsessed with knowing more, especially since Taylor was so close to where I grew up. Pretty soon I was discovering other local promotions like Mid-West Championship Wrestling in Inkster. Al Snow was the MTW Champion and I got to see many of my mentors like Mickey, Scott, Swingman, Clancy, Apollo, JT and Bradford work before I made the leap and joined CanAm Wrestling School in 1996. Honored to still see most of these guys, it’s a brotherhood I cherish.

I have never cared for Meltzer’s star ratings. Most of his “5” star matches have taken place in Japan, and it’s obvious he prefers that presentation. Very rarely has WWE received a 5 star rating, despite having incredible matches for decades. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels in the past made the cut, and lately Gunther has been awarded 5 stars, but talent like Macho Man, Mr. Perfect, Tito Santana, Kurt Angle, and the list goes on only reached 4 stars or a little higher.
Clearly there is a bias which is why I never took Meltzer seriously. Fit Finlay, Jake Roberts, Ronnie Garvin, William Regal are others who never cracked a 5 star. What’s my point? An opinionated journalist who somehow, someway was able to work many of the Boys into giving his takes credibility, when in reality it taught fans to critique a live performance instead of enjoying the entertainment, the emotion and the story that is being provided. There are worthy wrestlers that are legendary that aren’t even included in his imaginary “hall of fame”.
All fans have a right to pick and choose their favorites, but I find that a lot of times there comes with that an attitude of disrespect for a number of talents that they don’t care for, for no reason whatsoever. Don’t be like that. If you’re a wrestling fan, like what you like but please respect all the talent that gives their bodies for your enjoyment. Trust me, there’s a reason why certain wrestlers have longevity, and it’s because they are safe to work with, they are reliable and can be trusted to do business. Fans may not understand that but they should appreciate it nonetheless.
