Sheep shearing is essential for the well-being of the sheep. Regular shearing prevents the fleece from becoming overgrown, which can cause overheating and discomfort, especially in the warmer months. Removing the wool also helps to prevent parasitic infestations and skin diseases, ensuring the sheep remain healthy and comfortable. Additionally, shearing allows for better mobility and cleanliness, promoting overall better health for the flock. Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the benefits of traditional sheep shearing. See you at the farm!

Fresh donuts this weekend!
This weekend, enjoy our frosted strawberry and blueberry doughnuts! On Saturday, savor hot, fresh strawberry doughnuts, and on Sunday, delight in freshly made blueberry doughnuts. Aaron collaborates with Farmer Nick on numerous projects, ensuring the farm runs smoothly. His contributions include collecting eggs, mowing, and countless other tasks essential to the farm's success. Aaron’s dedication and hard work exemplify the spirit of fatherhood and community.
On this special day, we also want to honor all fathers and recognize how special they are. Bring your father to the farm this Sunday and spend some quality time together. Celebrate the love and hard work of dads like Aaron and make lasting memories with your family. Happy Father’s Day!

Our Story

Purchased in January 2016, Douglas Orchard, renamed Douglas Orchard & Farm was originally settled by the Nipmuc Indians and farmed since the 1700's with cattle grazing and alfalfa. In 1964 Robert Werme Sr. planted and cultivated 2 acres of apple trees and one acre of blueberry bushes. Unfortunately the orchard was neglected for over five years and over run by bittersweet. The 17 acres of land was slated for development. The farm was just the thing that Nick Socrat, farmer and graduate from UMass Amherst in Sustainable Agriculture and Farming was looking for. His interest in organic farming practices and permaculture with a diverse farm has begun.
The apple orchard is being restored. Our gardens will provide many different vegetables, herbs and flowers. Nick uses organic practices in his gardens, companion planting and chop and drop method, which means no till and weeds are not so bad as long as they don't shade the plants that need sun, if so they are chopped then dropped. Best of all Farmer Nick NEVER sprays his vegetables.
Organic chicken and duck eggs are available all year round along with our own raw honey, lamb, pork and organic whole chickens. PYO blueberries be available mid July. Harvests of shiitake mushrooms available in the spring through fall, fresh and/or dried.. The Country Store is open year round. Check facebook or web site for hours.
The green house and high tunnel are built and being used so the community can be provided fresh veggies out of season! Farmer Nick has big plans so every year expect something new.
We encourage the community to visit the farm to see the workings of the farm. Farm tours available. We have space above our store for birthday parties and work shops. Come hang out at the farm. Visit our farm animals, picnic and play some corn hole!
