Listen to Carrie Eldridge, bus driver from First Student, as she recalls a day when she was instrumental in saving a little girls life. This story happened when Carrie was new to driving busses and had no training with recognizing mental health challenges or suicide prevention, but her instincts kicked in and she alerted folks on her route to what she observed and heard from a child who was experiencing abuse at home. Carrie, you are a rockstar. This goes to show that you don’t always need to be a clinician to pick up on something distressful happening to a child (or adult!) with regard to mental health challenges. When we eliminate stigma, we become open to recognizing risk factors and warning signs in someone and more apt to offer help to someone in emotional distress. If you see something, say something. You could save a life. Way to go Carrie! We are proud of you!
