Bee's Pets and Things
Spreading information about properly caring for your pets with a focus on the exotics and unusual ones! Information on wildlife as well! Hello!
"and things" includes writing, drawing, and twitch streaming various video games, as well as random projects! I'm just a person super in love with animals and wanting to do whatever I can with them. I'm also someone who spent a lot of time pulling weeds with my mother and can use that to my advantage now as I help others with their weeding! I grew up in Massillon, Ohio and went to school to study
It's that time of year, festivals and fairs are all over the place! Unfortunately, this is one of the main places people get goldfish and hermit crabs, two animals that actually require a lot of care!
The best way to avoid accidentally winning one of these animals, and to also prove a point of not supporting this practice is to not play any games giving away live animals as prizes.
However, if you find yourself holding a bagged goldfish or a plastic container with a hermit crab, let me give you the basic rundown!
Goldfish specifically get HUGE. Most fair prize goldfish are the Comet Goldfish. This variety is slim shaped and needs at least a 10 gallon to start at 2-3 inches, but with their rate of growth would quickly need a 55 gallon tank or larger. If you do not have the means of giving these guys that size tank, you can put them in an outdoor pond (of similar gallon size) and that works as well! You can also find a friend or family member with a PRIVATE pond to let your fish live out its life! They can live 20 years with proper care.
Hermit Crabs are much more finicky about their care than just keeping in a plastic container. A consistent humidity (at least 70%) and a heat source are a requirement, not a suggestion. You can get away with a 10 gallon tank, however as crabs grow you will need to go bigger! I've seen some amazing 75 gallon tanks set up for Hermit Crabs. They also require Fresh AND Salt water! No sponges please, just vessels of water that are deep enough for them to fully submerge and still get back out safely. You'll also want to make sure you have deep enough substrate, a sand/coco fiber mix is best (5:1). Not to mention food and extra shells.
If you're in over your head with this, reach out to local groups and species specific groups to get some help with rehoming and possibly setting up something a bit less expensive. If you have any questions or need help finding the cheapest way to get your new pet what it needs let me know! I will help gather a shopping list for you.
Information on Hermit Crabs specifically can be found through the Land Hermit Crab Owners Society's website. Comet Goldfish care is trickier, but I find the best information from fish groups here on Facebook!
Remember, Surviving IS NOT Thriving! Give your pets what they need to be truly happy, and not just living a miserable life having their needs barely met.
I'm live RIGHT NOW! Playing Overwatch :) Maybe Stardew later?

"if i am killed for simply living,
let death be kinder than man.
and god,
please let the deer on the highway get some kind of heaven
something with tall soft grass and sweet reunion
let the moths in the porch lights go some place with a thousand suns,
that taste like sugar and get swallowed whole.
may the mice in oil and glue
have forever dry, warm fur and full bellies.
i pray nobody kills me for the crime of being small."

This poem combination struck many people, including myself. These creatures are little, and have the unfortunate burden of being “ugly” or “scary”. Yet they are little lives too, ones that do not understand what they may be doing wrong.
The spider in your house doesn’t know the difference between inside and outside. It only knows that houses a warm and sheltered.
The snakes in your yard do not understand boundaries between yards and “wild”, they only know the earth.
The mice concern themselves only with finding food to provide for themselves and their young. They do not mean to carry disease and fleas.
If any of these animals, or any others, have ever been a “nope!” Animal for you, perhaps try giving them a chance. They don’t have to be your next favorite animal, but they deserve to live.
I posted a few weeks ago that things would be changing here on this page. Well, the time is happening! It's going to take some time for me to fully figure out how I want to go about my page but the basics is: I'm no longer a yard services/pet sitting page.
I have plenty of clients and actually had to turn some down this spring. Health issues arose this winter and while I'm perfectly healthy, it made me realize I need to step back and chill out. I love the work and of course the money, but especially since it's no longer a huge need I'm taking time to focus more on myself and my family instead.
However, my true passion was never yard work or pet sitting. My true passion is animals and the care of the animals. Husbandry, if you will. Working at a pet store I see too many customers come in with absolutely no information about an animal, or having gotten one and are doing everything wrong. I want to change that.
For now on, this page will be mostly focused on Animal Husbandry and general animal information. You might be asking yourself what the "and things" part means then and well, I have other things I like to do too!
I've always wanted to stream on Twitch and I have an account where I play Overwatch and other games (Stardew Valley is an option now!) so I will be trying to focus on that. It will take some time (and some confidence on my part because it's scary talking when there are others home!) but I'm excited for this to eventually be an option, even if it's just when I'm on anyway.
There's also my creative outlets. I mainly write fanfiction but I have novel/series ideas I've tossed around since I was young. If I ever gather the willpower to do it, I'd love to accomplish that at some point! Let's not forget my drawing and other crafty things I like to do. Those will be posted here.
If at any point you wish to support me, you can donate to my Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/1littlebee
Thank you all for supporting me through this time, whether you're a past client or family and friends. It means a lot! I'm not sure where life will take me but I want this page to sort of lead me to it, if you will.

The downside of yardwork. Today I had to sacrifice my bucket to the bees.
No worries, I’ll be going back Monday anyway, I’ll just do my best to get it back then.
Wasn’t worth getting stung over, again 😅
Fall is here! Leaves haven't completely started turning here, but it's coming!

Pomp is going to be 3 in February, and for a rat, that’s pretty old! Their lifespan is generally 2-4 years, but 2-3 being the average. Pomp’s brother, Yagi, passed last October from a tumor.
Part of having an older animal is making sure their cage is suited for their needs, and less suited for the general standard. Pomp started having issues with his back legs, so here is his retirement set up! Its much messier and busy now, but the base is just lowered everything. The easier it is for him to move around, the better!
Rats are social animals and should never be alone except in instances like this. When his brother passed, I would have gotten more rats had I been ready for them. However once Pomp passes, I’m not getting more for a whole. Therefore I needed to not start the never ending cycle of continuing to have more than one.

Exciting news! We've opened a RedBubble shop :) I'd love to hear what things might interest you to see on my page! I'm still new to digital art (that's not heavily using stock photos) so I'm a bit rusty but I would love to be able to cater to what YOU want, and not just the fun little ideas in my head.

This package will run until the first snowfall! If interested, please send a message.
Mulch can be provided, exceptions apply. Please know that the number of bags you need will change availability. Payment may also be required for the mulch ahead of time (does not include payment for labor).
Happy Tuesday! It’s officially spooky season, but don’t be alarmed! Pomp doesn’t want you to be scared of him.
Did you know rats are not as dirty as you would think? They spend hours a day cleaning themselves.
I once did an experiment in biology class where we took samples of different things we could swab, and then we let the bacteria culture so we could see what was the dirtiest. Between a rats mouth and the refrigerator door handle of the animal room, guess what was dirtier? 🤢 The handle!
