Welcome to adulthood! Isn’t this great?!

The position that you find yourself sleeping most frequently in is an important point to mention in your consultation. It is helpful information to evaluate which muscles may need to be worked on! This may seem odd but you’re putting your body in a position for 6-8 hours with the possibility of limited movement.

Imagine clenching your fist for 8 hours, 7 days a week, how do you think your hand and forearm would feel when you let go? 😬 The concept is the same!

Let’s try to be self loving and proactive and address any little (or big) concerns you have with your body! The time is ALWAYS now to put your own care at the top of your to do list.

It happens to the best of us right?! 😅

Those who sleep on their sides will often have tight pecs due to positioning for that many hours.

Why does that matter? If you suffer from upper back pain, THIS could be the culprit! Pecs that are shortened due to tension will stretch your back muscles out farther than they should be. Result? 💥 Back pain.

So if you’re coming in for back pain, this is why we stretch and work the chest too. 👌

Work on mind/ body connection to recognize when you’re slouching and take the initiative to come see me. 👌

The million dollar question: How often should I get a massage?

Though the answer depends on why you’re going, here are the basic bones.

If you are in acute pain or injured it’s best to try a weekly regime until your pain is under control. Once you’re making progress (and doing self care in between at home, I’m good but not a miracle worker 😂) you can continue to stretch out the duration in between to bi-weekly then monthly as maintenance.

The real key is to be proactive. Waiting until you can’t move to get out of bed is a far lengthier process to reverse than taking the time to keep the muscles healthy in the first place. Chasing pain is never the greatest idea. Stay ahead of it and take care of yourself. Your body will thank you.

Post worthy topic: Does deep tissue massage hurt?

Fiction: “If I’m not in pain it’s not working.” is something I hear frequently. Truth of the matter is if you’re at a level of pain that you’re tensing up, your brain will send a message to the area to “guard and protect” and the real benefit of relaxation to the area won’t be fully met. Once your in a higher level of discomfort you also trigger your fight or flight response releasing adrenaline and cortisol (your stress hormone 😬). So being in a high level of pain during a massage is counterproductive to your body.

Fact: As deeper layers of muscles are worked and trigger points (tender spots or “knots”) are released it can be somewhat uncomfortable. Loose rule of thumb is never greater than a 7 on a pain scale, never to the point of holding your breath and tensing up. Truth is, you can massage an area of your body gently and after a while the increased blood flow will continue to relax muscle fibers and eventually you will be able to work deeper layers. Doesn’t have to include tears rolling down your face and sweating from pain. Deep tissue massage should be enjoyable and productive to the body’s natural balance.

So no need to walk out of your appointment wanting to cut a body part off thinking you’ll feel great next week. The more you know, the better you shall be ❤️

💥 Important fact 💥

A lot of times where you are feeling your pain is the result of tension in the muscle doing the opposite action or nearby muscle pulling on it. Like a pulley system, if one muscle is contracted it will put strain on the other muscles stretching it further than it should be causing discomfort.

Have upper back pain? Let your massage therapist work on releasing your pecs.

Have low back pain? Let your massage therapist work on releasing your hip flexors and glutes.

Our muscles are designed to work in harmony together and sometimes that gets off kilter. Lets get back into balance.
