I take pride in my work, and I care deeply about what I do. I learned my craft in New York City, working for Sam Ash Music on the famed Music Row, 48th St. in Times Square, Manhattan where I started as a coffee-running apprentice and worked my way up to head woodwind repairman of their flagship store. After working for Sam Ash, I opened a small saxophone specialty shop in Brooklyn where I repaired

It is amazing to see how many old horns with mostly original pads have a few leaks *only in the pads that were replaced at some point*. To me, this speaks to the superiority of knowing your geometry and using as little floating of pads as necessary. At the factory, they have the benefit of a controlled environment where they know everything about the horn, and they can say "ok, when this comes off the line, add a little bit of adhesive and put a .165"(or whatever they choose) pad in there, heat it, maybe bend it L/R if necessary, clamp it, and it will seat". Down the road us repairers lack the knowledge of the exact original intended measurements and also have to deal with the ravages of time (and other repairers, professional and non). Getting the horn back to a geometry that is friendly to pad installation is a huge part of a long-lasting pad job, and unfortunately is both fairly invisible to the customer (at least in the short term) and seems to be something that can only be learned through time, experience, and quite possibly having a knack for it.
Related: some modern makers of recent origin see the original setup on old saxes and think ah! ok! so we don't need much adhesive. However they do not control their geometry as well (indeed rather than designing from clean sheet they are usually copying saxes they have purchased, and inevitably something gets lost in translation if nothing else) and the toneholes are not level and the pads are low quality etc. etc. and you end up with pads that do not seal and cannot be corrected easily.
Saxophone Repair Tip: Making Pad Prick Holes Go Away
Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of http://www.StohrerMusic.com gives a quick hand-me-down tip on how to make the tiny holes in the sides of pads sometimes left by pad pricks/pin vises go away. Now of course its best not to put holes in the sides of pads, but sometimes, as Sam said to Mister Frodo, there's nothing for it. Except this tip of course, so you run and tell THAT your old gaffer, Samwise Gamgee.

For Sale: 1926 Conn New Wonder II Alto Saxophone, Burnished Gold Plate
"This is no meek beast. You don’t play a Conn from the 1920s with your frontal cortex alone. You will be muscling this horn around, and it will push back. These horns have ideas of their own, and not everyone can- or wants to- have a relationship like that with a saxophone. But for those who do, the rewards are a tone that will cause non-musicians in the back of the house to sit up and look to see where that sound is coming from. "
Stohrer Music
Here is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship from 1926, a Conn New Wonder Series II alto saxophone in burnished gold plate with elaborate engraving.
Let’s just get down to the nuts and bolts here: when I am done restoring this horn, this will be a stunningly beautiful alto with power and ri...
