Black August Haiku-575 Week 1: AYA/Endurance and Resourcefulness!

To honor the first week of Black August, we are inviting you to write Black August Haikus over the next 7 days. The theme is the adinkra symbol Aya representing “endurance and resourcefulness” (or whatever inspires you).

Some tips for writing your Haiku is to remember that a haiku is composed of only 3 lines (you make a longer haiku using multiple 3 line poems). Typically, every first line of haiku has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third has 5 syllables. A haiku is a poem. A haiku is a story. A Black August haiku is our story.

A prescription for Black AF storytelling Amber J. Phillips @amberabundance

Remember the hero and villain in each story (and that the hero isn’t perfect)
Take care of the reader (is the Haiku a snack?)
What does the story sound like? Is there music? Is there laughter?
Tell it like it is/Dream it like it could be (be honest/be hopeful and the switcheroo!))
Talk like you MFing Talk

A reminder from Omisade Burney-Scott @oshunsweetnsour

The story is a living thing that lives inside our bodies and our mouths
The storyteller is an oracle (or mouthpiece)
The listener is the connective tissue and transformed to hold the story as well
