A couple of years ago, Piper Owner Society Aviation Director Scott Sherer's Arrow suffered a cracked step that was picked up during inspection. He had it fixed by us and since that time, AWI has received a PMA (Part Manufacture Approval) for steps on most Piper airplanes.

The NTSB urges owners to be proactive and inspect exhaust systems more frequently than the recommended minimum.

“Get your fingers dirty by physically checking the exhaust stacks for movement and get your eyeballs on as much of the exhaust and heater systems as you can. Look for cracking or soot. With the cowl open, check your firewall from inside the cabin to ensure you can’t see light. Run a finger over the door seals and feel for cracks or missing chunks.”
