Today I did hot season garden side-by-side planting & coaching session with a client who had hired me to plant their cool garden for them. They were so excited about their success with the cool season crops that the whole family came out to learn and get their hands dirty today! Days like this are so fun and rewarding! 🌱

Refreshed a few flowerbeds last week at a sweet little AirBnb property in Eagle, which will be a lovely site for a wedding reception in a couple of months. πŸ’• 🌺 🌱 It's going to be gorgeous when the new annuals and perennials are in full bloom!

When your spinach starts to look like it has a bunch of tiny crowded leaves in the center, its season is over. That's a sign the spinach is getting ready to bolt, which means it is preparing to make seeds. Once it reaches this stage, the leaves will turn bitter, and it's time to pull it for the season. πŸ˜₯ If you still have lettuce going, it will turn bitter right about the same time as the spinach. Time to kill your leafy greens, and replace them with some πŸ”₯ hot season plants!

'Tis the season... and now you have some natural ways to combat those pests!

I'm so proud of my client's dedication to tending their cool season garden. 🌱 It's been a wild spring, with lots of wind, many cool overnight temps requiring frost covers, and lots of wet days. They were able to keep up with all of it, and harvested loads of lettuce, herbs, tulips, and now waiting on the strawberries & broccoli πŸ₯¦!
Now we're transitioning to their hot season garden - πŸ… tomatoes are in, and next up- melons, cucumbers, and zucchini!

Another beautiful day to create some beautiful custom container plantings... complete with a visit from a cute little squirrel. I love that this client feeds wildlife in their yard. πŸΏπŸ¦†

This is what 240 pounds of weeds looks like (plus a few random things). πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«Wouldn't you think there should be more in this truck bed?

The unsexy, unglamorous parts of my job are every bit as rewarding to me as it is to pot up colorful container designs and help people grow their own food - because this act of service grounds me, and brings me back to the core of why I started my business.

When we relocated to Idaho five years ago, one of the first things I noticed was how many people were moving from other states into their beautiful new homes here, with new landscaping that they knew next to nothing about how to care for. πŸ‘‰ And a tremendous lack of knowledgeable and/or reliable help for any gardening tasks.πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

I also noticed many people realllly struggling with their gardens here... and after quickly having overcome my own challenges with this in my new home state, I realized I am in a unique position to help people learn how to take care of their landscaping investments, and also help them be successful growing what they love.🌱🌺

In the case of the 240 pounds of weeds, this was the second of two loads this week, totaling 440 pounds of weeds altogether. Quite the workout! πŸ’ͺ

The wonderful elderly couple I helped on this job had fallen ill a few years ago, leaving both of them weak and physically unable to keep up with the outdoor maintenance at their property. She, a fiercely independent, hard worker who herself had loved to garden and had created beautiful flowerbeds, had looked at those weeds for four years, unable to do the work required to remove them. She was SO excited πŸ‘ to finally have fresh, clean flowerbeds again, she must have thanked me at least five times. ❀️ And at the end of the day, we sat and talked for a while, sharing stories about life, loss, and family.

The lowly task of weeding is not one many take on gladly, but I happen to enjoy it. SHE is the reason I do what I do, and a reminder of the importance of providing a quality, helpful, reliable service. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to stand in the gap and deliver.

It's custom container season! If you live in Eagle ID and would like your outdoor containers potted up, send a PM or call/text 2o8.510.644o to get on the schedule. Hurry, limited spots are available!

In Eagle ID, one of the more important tasks to prep your garden for the coming summer heat is to get your shade cloth supports in place πŸ₯΅πŸ”₯preferably BEFORE it heats up!
Today's addition of a wood frame "top" on the raised bed used to grow salsa tomatoes is prepped to do double duty:
1. The top of the box will be perfect to staple shade cloth to, which will protect the plants from our intense UV and heat.
2. Twine was wrapped around the root zone of the tomatoes and lasso'd to the top edges of the frame above, then gently wrapped around the main stem of the plant. This will provide the plants with a strong support right out of the gate.

Hey Eagle neighbors! Even though the weather might not seem like it today, our warm/hot gardening season is right around the corner - are you ready?! πŸ…

Did you know that by the end of MAY, most lettuces πŸ₯— will be done for the season? If you're buying lettuce right now to plant outdoors, it's going to be finished with its season soon and you're probably going to be disappointed πŸ˜• but you can plant it again in early fall!

If you live in Eagle & love a good salad straight from your garden but missed your timing, I want to help you! My name is Chris. I'm a garden consultant, coach, and kitchen garden designer, and I'm on a mission to help build a community of gardeners growing what they love in Eagle! 🌱

Does any of this describe where you are right now on your garden path:

πŸ₯— Do you want a beautiful kitchen garden with raised beds, but don’t have a clear idea of what that could look like, or where it should go? (I can help you!)

πŸ₯• Are you new to gardening, have your raised beds already and a vision of growing your own vibrant garden of abundant, fresh, healthy organic vegetables this year… but getting started is overwhelming?

πŸ˜• Are you a gardener who gave it a good shot last year, but you're frustrated because the garden didn’t do very well?

πŸ™„ You have a raised bed kitchen garden but don’t know how to maximize your space. (I can create seasonal planting plans for your raised beds!)

Do you know:

HOW to amend and enrich your soil?
WHAT to plant? 🌱
WHEN to plant it?
WHERE to buy it?
HOW to get the most out of your plants?

If not, it's OK - green thumbs can be learned, and I can help you!

I offer on-site coaching IN YOUR OWN garden, showing you how you can be successful growing what you like to eat. We'll work side by side, so you can learn how to grow healthy food for your family, step by step and season by season - and all organically, so your littles can help, and get their fingers dirty too.

I can also help you if you are HERE on your garden path:

⌚️ You want to grow your own healthy produce, but you don’t have time to shop for and plant your kitchen garden. ⌚️

It's not too late! I still have spaces left to help more gardeners get growing this season, so... if you’re ready to make this year THE year that you take on the garden and WIN πŸ…πŸ₯• send me a DM to get the conversation started, or feel free to call or text 2o8-51o-644o. Spaces are limited - let's get get growing!

❄️ FROST WARNING ⚠️ tonight through Thursday morning. It is advisable to have your frost covers in place this evening, and keep them on until mid day Thursday.

Today, a couple of brand new gardeners who want to learn alllllll of the plant and garden things started on their garden path with Step 1: soil prep for the season. I'm so proud of them! They just dug in and got to work, weeding everything from these old beds and adding fresh compost.

With soil amendments >> do not cheap out on this step! Adding rich organic compost and soil as needed every year is the keystone to your garden's success. Poor soil = poor plant performance.

They've got big dreams and willing to roll up their sleeves and learn! I can't wait for our 1:1 coaching session, where we'll plant their cool season garden side by side 🌱πŸ₯— and transform these raised beds into a vibrant yard-to-table backyard garden that they can harvest from again and again.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start with your garden or when to grow what, I can help! With 1:1 coaching in your own garden, you'll learn timing and seasonality at an easy pace. My goal is to help YOU become a confident gardener - which is absolutely a skill that can be learned. πŸ’―

Take the first step today - send me a PM or call/text 2o8.510.644o and let's get growing!

It's container planting season 🌺 but it's also still Idaho, where we are currently expecting overnight temps this evening in the low 30's. πŸ₯Ά

While many of us have spring fever and are anxious to get all the planty things planted, patience is required. 🫀

It can - and has - snowed 🌨 here as late as May 9 (2021), so it's best to wait βœ‹οΈπŸ›‘ to get your containers potted up until close to our last frost date of May 10.

Till then, we buy the beautiful plants.... and we wait πŸ™ƒ (unless you have frost covers - then go for it!!!)

If you'd like to have your outdoor containers planted for you with a beautiful custom planting design, let's talk! Send a PM or call/text 2o8.510.644o.

Happy spring 🌱 πŸ’œ πŸŒΊβ„οΈβ˜€οΈπŸ₯ΆπŸ€ͺ

Here's one of the most important tools of spring. What is it and why should you care? FROST πŸ₯Ά CLOTH.

Did you feel the chill in the air today? ❄️ Frost warning ⚠️ for tonight and tomorrow night - cover your young and sensitive plants!

Gardening in Idaho requires you to get it right with both timing πŸ•™ and 🌑 temperatures, which can fluctuate greatly.

Not only do you need to time your planting based on seasonality, but you also need the right tools to protect your plants from the elements. ❄️ Frost cloth is a relatively inexpensive way to protect your investment in your garden during the cool season. You can find this locally at most farm supply stores, Fred Meyer, and Zamzow's.

Happy spring πŸ€ͺβ„οΈβ˜€οΈπŸŒ±πŸ₯Ά

Spring storms in Idaho

03/28/2024

A couple of cool season client gardens waiting for real spring 😎 to show up before they can be planted.

Eagle friends, if you're buying plants 🌱 for your garden, please be sure to watch the weather forecast closely! We'll continue to see storms roll through well into next week, better to wait until they pass before planting. Spring storms β›ˆοΈ frequently bring temperature drops πŸ₯Ά and hail, which can devastate your tender new plants. πŸ˜₯

In gardening, timing is everything. Waiting out the weather can make all the difference in how your garden gets started this year. Better safe than sorry πŸ₯€

It's time in Eagle to:

🌱 start your seeds indoors for veggies πŸ…, herbs 🌿, and annuals you want to grow in the WARM/HOT season

🌱 sow in-ground seeds for the current COOL season veggies and herbs* πŸ₯—

🌱 plant lettuce, broccoli,πŸ₯¦ cauliflower now for the current COOL season*

⚠️*CAUTION: COVER YOUR GARDEN BEDS WITH FROST CLOTH AFTER PLANTING! We will still experience many more evenings with low temperatures and frost ❄️, and it's been known to snow🌨 here into early May.

If you're not sure what to do, how to do it, or when to do each step in your garden, let's chat. I'm a garden coach helping people create beautiful spaces and learn to grow what they love to eat- and I can help you too! Also feel free to text/call 2o8.510.644o to get the conversation started.
