Last night my husband and I took a relaxing little paddle on Half Moon Lake. We left from downtown after work at 6pm, we drove 5 minutes away to the lake, and paddled until it got dark. We saw beautiful sandstone formations, watched fish jump, spotted some deer on the bank, and got to see some lily pads blooming. All without leaving the city. I love Eau Claire. We’re so lucky. Pro small business = pro affordable healthcare —— You might have noticed that we’ve been pretty quiet on social media recently and I wanted to share why. Two days before opening our doors in November last year, I ended up in the Emergency Room overnight with severe abdominal pain. What they found in the ER led to a major abdominal surgery and 8 additional procedures. I’ve been on a long and challenging journey back to good health for the last 4 weeks since my surgery, but feel grateful that I’m finally feeling well enough to be back at it this week. I’m going to be fine, so no need to worry. But I wanted to share how this experience showed me just how important access to healthcare is for small business owners. I’ve dreamed of starting a small business for 10 years, but leaving a job with health insurance benefits was just too scary until I got married and was able to access health insurance through my partner. Before getting married, I was terrified of taking a chance on going uninsured and having a major health event happen, plunging me into a financial hole I could never get out of. It’s crazy to me that the thing I was most afraid of actually happened. I started a business and I did have a major health event. I’m just lucky that I am insured and I’ll never have to pay the nearly $300K of medical bills I’ve racked up over the last 5 months. This is all to say that people should not have to wait to get married to feel secure enough to start a business. Running into the holiday weekend like… Who’s getting outside this weekend?? 🙋‍♀️ I’m headed up to Moose Lake Sate Park in northern Minnesota for some camping. We’re planning to take it easy and spend some time by the water with the heat coming. Maybe some hiking if the weather allows. We can all safely find joy outside in almost any weather conditions, we just have to be creative and flexible and adjust to Mother Nature!
