DID YOU KNOW...

Michigan actively participates in Older Americans Month. In May 2022, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed it as Older Americans Month in Michigan. The state recognizes the significant contributions made by adults aged 60 years and older who positively impact the community every day. Michigan has more residents over the age of 60 than under 18, emphasizing the importance of supporting older adults in maintaining their health, independence, and happiness as they age. Michigan was also the first state in the Midwest and the fifth in the nation to join the AARP/World Health Organization Age-Friendly movement. This year’s theme, “Age My Way,” encourages learning about aging independently so that older adults can remain engaged with their communities for as long as possible.

Additionally, in March 2022, Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared it as Older Americans Act National Senior Nutrition Program Month in Michigan. The state encourages older Michiganders facing food insecurity to reach out to their local Area Agency on Aging to learn about available programs and resources.

Michigan has consistently recognized the value of its older population, and initiatives like Senior Action Week (held from May 9-13, 2022) further promote engagement and support for older adults across the state.

Community Champions 2024 Nominee: S&D P.J. Housing.

At S&D PJ Housing, the mission is singular and resolute: to transform lives, one woman at a time. E.B. and her team are dedicated to empowering women transitioning from incarceration by offering safe housing, comprehensive educational resources, and impactful community initiatives. Each of their programs is meticulously crafted to nurture growth, provide unwavering support, and facilitate successful reintegration into our communities. S&D PJ Housing works with over 100 children and adults in the community.

E.B. also represents the Voting Access for All Coalition (VAAC), which gives a voice to those impacted by the Criminal Legal System. The team aims to give back power and remove barriers to voting; whether it be logistical, informational, or lack of trust in the process, VAAC works to educate formerly incarcerated individuals on voter suppression and the power they have to help decide our governmental leaders and laws.

To get in contact with S&D P.J. Housing, please email [email protected] or visit https://pjhousing.org/.

Join us on April 24th from 6-7 PM for our Community Champions event, as we amplify the voices of grassroots non-profits striving to make a difference in our communities.
