The most important element in dealing with a crying child is accepting that crying is completely okay! It's a natural and healthy way of expressing emotions when learning new things. We teach our swim teachers to respond rather than react through specific techniques to help kids having a difficult time. 🏊 At Foss Swim School, our approach to teaching swimming begins with getting kids to a place where they can laugh. Our answer: SAFETY WEEK! During Safety Week, our older students jump into the water with their clothes on to simulate falling into the water unexpectedly. We do this to teach them some important lessons: 💙 DON'T PANIC! Having kids experience how heavy wet clothes are and how different their buoyancy is will help them not panic if this ever happens in the real world. 💛 SWIM THE MOMMA BIRD! The "momma bird" is the safety stroke we teach our students. It's the most efficient stroke for this extreme situation. 💙 EVERYTHING CHANGES! Students will learn how wet clothing weighs down arms, drags water, and makes standard strokes like freestyle tiring. By giving students a safe, controlled space to experience this scary situation, they can learn and apply these critical lessons if needed. Safety Week has been a tradition at Foss Swim School since the beginning.
