Julian Lopez has been a west coast based dancer for the bulk of his career working with choreographers in Los Angeles and San Fransisco. Most recently he accepted the offer as company member with Soul Skin Dance Company based out of The Bay Area where he at Mission Dance Theater in San Francisco, CA. As an active artist in the community, Julian met with many dancers around the city and took part in social dancing and improv jams held by other dance artists and theaters weekly. Choreographing has always been an integral part of his career, his most well known choreographies have been created during his time under contract with The Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation in Amarillo, TX. Along with Choreographing and Dancing, he has another attribute as a professional pilates instructor working with well recognized names such as Elijah Wood, D’Arcy Carden and Kennedy Summers teaching up to 37 classes a week in California.
Earlier in his life Julian played percussion and studied Kenpo Karate where he achieved his 1st degree black belt and began studying ballet at The Ballet Centre in El Paso, TX. While transitioning out of high school he began dancing with Winter Guards and competing in the Independent circuit for Americas Independent Winterguard all while studying at EPCC Valle Verde for his degree in dance. After taking part in ACDFA (American College Dance Foundation Association) Julian was recruited to Sam Houston State University where he graduated with his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance and became a Balanced Body certified pilates instructor. Once in Los Angeles, he began taking dance classes at well known studios such as The Edge Dance Studio, Millennium and The Playground LA. After many auditions for broadway and other traveling companies Julian found Project 21 Dance Company based out of East L.A. where he danced for 6 seasons. Immediately after Julian moved to San Fransisco and began training at Alonzo Kings Lines and O.D.C. Dance Commons where he was signed to Soul Skin Dance Company.
Most of Julian’s works have been impacted with emotional content that he has lived through, coming from a boarder city and the struggles of making a career in the southwest. Julian has created pieces in many places and has entered festivals of Dance for Cameras in California and Texas. His most recent work being a self choreographed and self edited piece called “A Trois” was an investigation towards the interaction with the dancer and the intimacy that lighting can produce for a performer. He has debuted pieces at university levels, sight specific dance, as well as company dance works throughout the southwest.
Most of Julian’s teaching come from his Pilates background and teach life lessons for longevity, which will serve his student. He truly found his calling in Los Angeles when he realized through pilates and dance that “how” you say things can give you a different outcome in the body you are working with. After working with many bodies and taking on the hustle of the career dancers ask for, Julian has found that the product will speak for itself. Through all the auditions, struggles for rent, tough times in a new city and nights doing with out, Julian has learned through all the bitter sweet times; always stay humble and follow your dreams.
