Happy Monday, CHS Miners! ⛏ Last Friday, our college hosted its annual Viva La Salud conference at the Texas Gas Conference Center. Happy Wednesday, CHS Miners! ⛏ We're pleased to help promote the new website and Instagram channel for the Bioergonomics Laboratory, directed by Dr. Gabriel Ibarra Mejia, associate professor of Public Health Sciences.
The BioErgonomics Lab investigates the impact of environmental and working conditions on various occupations, focusing on outdoor workers at risk of infectious diseases and climate-related health issues. Their mission is to translate lab findings into practical solutions for the community, providing hands-on learning experiences for students and addressing global environmental health challenges.

Happy Thursday, CHS Miners! ⛏️ Check out this reel featuring a collaborative learning session with Dr. Gurovich’s CAPh lab and Dr. Ibarra’s Bioergonomics lab! Dr. Daniel Conde and PhD student Angel Melendez led a VO2max training to better prepare researchers for current and upcoming studies. VO2max is a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can utilize during intense exercise, and it’s crucial for understanding cardiovascular fitness and endurance. This training was both effective and a good example of interdisciplinary learning.

Over the next 4 months, we’ll offer group sessions and individual coaching to create personalized plans for a more active lifestyle. Participants will wear FitBits and use daily prompts to increase their activity. Huge thanks to the NeuroEXCEL group and our amazing research coordinator, Jessica Hoffman, for making this possible! “The sample that you’re testing, there’s a patient behind it.” Martha Rubi Gasca, the lead medical laboratory scientist at the El Paso Department of Public Health Laboratory, graduated from the Clinical Laboratory Science program in the College of Health Sciences. She said that UTEP instructors train students to have human approach to even the most clinical work.
