The Cello is a truly beautiful instrument, it is both a solo instrument and an orchestral instrument. It is a bowed sometimes plucked string instrument in the violin family. It has four strings typically tuned in perfect fifths. It is tuned the same as a viola but an octave lower. Listen for it's deep, full, sound! Some people say it is the instrument that most closely resembles the human voice.

Cellos are a crucial part of orchestral music, every symphonic piece involves a cello section. Most of the time, cellos fill out the lower register of the music, they also often play the melody for different sections. Of course there are also cello concertos, these are orchestral pieces that feature a solo cellist.

We have some great teachers who can help you learn this amazing instrument! www.greatlakesmusicacademy.com/teachers

Some history of the Mandolin: The mandolin was brought to America right around the turn of the last century 1900 by Italians. The first mandolins in America were of the neapolitan style, they had a deep bowl back. They also had a flat top, basically they were standard Italian style. This style of mandolin was eventually produced in America, they were available through mail order catalogs. Produced and purchased by the thousands, mandolins used to be in vogue when there was an interest in Mandolin Orchestras. There were so many immigrants arriving in the late 1800’s and there was a real strong sense of community as they created mandolin orchestras in their new home towns.

We often get asked, at what age should my child start music lessons?

The simple answer is somewhere around 5 years old and up, but it really depends on the student and the instrument. For piano, the youngest that we usually recommend is 5, but violin students can often flourish in lessons even younger. If your child is interested in a wind or brass instrument, it’s usually better for them to start around 9 or 10. For those students, we would recommend starting out on piano, as piano is a great first instrument, and what students learn in piano lessons can easily be transferred to other instruments later on. Feel free to reach out to us with questions about this - we’re happy to discuss your individual situation and come up with a plan!

Although some musicians learn to use their instruments to play by ear (and even some famous ones have!), learning to read music helps you to better understand the history & culture of the music you listen to. It can also help you pick up other instruments quickly, and it's even said to have mental health benefits! It doesn't have to be hard - there are lots of great tools out there to get started!
