We asked some of our dedicated volunteers to share why they choose to volunteer with NorthBay Health. Today, meet Lisa McKim, one of the wonderful volunteers at our Alzheimer’s Resource Center.

“I was inspired to volunteer when I retired from my 35-year state career in 2023. I missed the people connection, along with collaborating and working in a team environment. I felt my skills could be an asset and used in an area which has significant meaning to me.

In 2013 my mother was diagnosed with dementia and passed in 2018. Upon her diagnosis I discovered the NorthBay Alzheimer's Resource Center. They were here for me when I needed it most. I was able to journey along with my mom with patience, care and understanding. The most important thing I discovered is I was not alone. A caregiver feeling alone is very scary. I was scared but found a safe and compassionate environment with those who were experiencing the same. I was no longer scared and was so grateful for all of the advice and knowledge presented to me through the support group meetings sponsored by NorthBay.

I will always advocate and support caregiver needs. Caregivers are sometimes overlooked, but are as important, and critical, to ensure loved one's needs are being fulfilled. Because I gained so much about myself in so many ways, I found volunteering as my way of giving back. This group made such an impact in my life, including my mother's life. I was able to successfully navigate this process with the volunteers who preceded me. I love guiding and supporting caregivers and hope to continue along this journey. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to give back to my community.

We asked some of our dedicated volunteers to share why they volunteer with NorthBay Health.. Today, meet Ibrahim Soumahoro a volunteer in our Emergency Department who answers the question:

What keeps you motivated to continue volunteering?

"The patients sometimes need a person to talk to and vent about their situation and how they are feeling. As a volunteer, I have stepped into that role and every week I make it a priority to try and brighten the day of at least one patient that I come across. I also enjoy being in the hospital atmosphere and interacting with patients and healthcare professionals!"

We asked some of our dedicated volunteers to share why they choose to volunteer with NorthBay Health. Today, meet Jo Musha, who volunteers in our surgery center.

"When I was getting ready to retire last year I knew I wanted to volunteer in some type of medical facility. When I was discussing this with my daughter (who works at the surgery center) she suggested I volunteer at the center and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I get so much joy out of helping others who just need a little encouragement and kindness. I know that both the patients and staff truly appreciate what I do but truth be told, it is me who truly appreciates the opportunity to make a difference."

We asked some of our dedicated volunteers to share why they choose to volunteer with NorthBay Health. Today, meet Phong Tran, one of the talented teen volunteers who give their time to help our patients.

"Being a volunteer while still in high school is a big deal to me, it has helped me learn and experience what it is like to be in a hospital or a care facility and see amazing things that doctors and nurses do during my service hours. As a Teen Volunteer, I provide comfort items to patients and visit with them. It brings me joy being able to interact with patients and provide items like a much needed toothbrush or stuffed animal for soothing. When I volunteer I feel like I am part of a small community that I would love to explore more of in the future. With these opportunities, my goal is to contribute more to the community as my interests for the future are a career in the medical field, leaning toward nursing or somewhere in the radiology field."

In celebrating Women’s History Month, NorthBay Health invited a number of our strong female colleagues to share thoughts on a variety of topics. Today meet Internal Medicine Physician Larissa Chartrand, M.D., who answers the question:

Name three important qualities that women should have to be successful. Are they the same for men?

Optimism, pragmatism, and resiliency are unique qualities that a highly successful leader, either woman or man, embodies. However, in my experience training young physicians, without resiliency, it is more difficult for a woman than a man to be identified as a leader.

In celebrating Women’s History Month, NorthBay Health invited a number of our strong female colleagues to share thoughts on a variety of topics. Today meet Mohua Mukherjee, Assistant Vice President of Revenue Cycle Services, who answers the question:

Name three important qualities that women should have to be successful. Are they the same for men?

Empathy is a critical quality that allows us to be able connect with our patients, team, peers and everyone we interact with. By understanding how our actions can and will impact others; allows us to problem solve and have meaningful collaboration towards our goal. Second quality is having an open mind towards diverse perspective. By opening ourselves up and being receptive to ideas from others can be truly help us grow our perspective. And finally, it is passion that will drive us to empathize, keeping an open mind, working hard towards our goal. We all can benefit greatly from the above.
