Rockaway Film Festival Presents the Arverne Cinema

Rockaway has a cinema once again. On Thursday, August 19, the outdoor Arverne Cinema, presented by the folks behind the Rockaway Film Festival, will open its doors for its first official screening.

Since launching in 2018, the Rockaway Film Festival, founded by Sam Fleischner and Courtney Muller, has transformed and grown in many ways. From their start in a warehouse on Beach 74th Street, to movie nights at the Rockaway Brewing Company to partnering with the Tribeca Film Festival, Fleischner and Muller have found creative ways to bring films to a place that hasn’t had a movie theater in more than 20 years. “We’ve been learning lessons, but it’s been really exciting. We’re approaching our fifth year and with each year, we expand and do so much more and so far we’ve been able to pull it off and it’s really exciting. Any opportunity we’ve had to show movies is exciting,” Muller said. Now they’re gearing up to open the Arverne Cinema, located at 72-02 Gouverneur Avenue in Arverne.
