Halfway Home Wildlife Rehab
HHWR is a home based, DNR licensed, non-profit dedicated to rescuing injured and orphaned wildlife and we then return them to nature after.
Halfway Home was formed in response to the need for rescue services for those without a voice. Wildlife is usually misunderstood and often marginalized. Wildlife Rehabilitators are NOT paid by the State or any other organization; this is all done on a 100% volunteer basis and we rely entirely on donations. We are a register 501(c)(3) Non-Profit. Halfway Home is licensed by the state of MI & overse
Missy's cat snuck past her as she was trying to let her dog in this morning and he grabbed this little fox squirrel. Even though mom and sibling were nearby, this little one was paralyzed with fear and would not rejoin them. Worried her cat may have injured him, she contact us. Because cat bites are one of the worst bites a baby animal can encounter, we had her get him right over to Kim for evaluation. She was able to find a bite wound on his tail and behind his leg which will require a course of antibiotics. Hopefully this was caught soon enough and he makes a full recovery๐

Remember Scout who came to us in the start of June? Gabriel brought him to us after he sustained a pretty bad knock on the head.
After 3 long months of rehab, and spending the last couple of months with Kim and her squirrels, he has finally gone free ๐ฅณ
This story and so many others are true testament to just how incredible our team is and their dedication to the animals in our care๐ฉถ๐ฉท๐ฉถ
Well done Kim๐ฉถ
If youโre like the majority of people, you probably live in a home thatโs less than ideal. Maybe your neighborhood has higher crime rates than you like. Maybe your kids have to share a bedroom. Maybe itโs drafty and your heating bill is crazy. Maybe you have popcorn ceilings.
But even if your home isnโt ideal, thereโs a reason youโre there, right? Your home is the one that is affordable for your family, the one thatโs closest to your work, the one near the schools you liked, or the one that was best for your pets. Wild animals, too, always have a reason for the habitats they choose: accessibility of food and water, lack of competition, closeness to extended family, and so on.
No matter how imperfect your home is, it wouldnโt go well for you if someone broke into your house, kidnapped and separated your family, and dropped you off in someone elseโs nicer home. The owner of the nicer home would chase you away at the least or might even think youโre dangerous and kill you. Imagine how unnerving it would be if you had no possible way to get back to your original home and if your only hope of shelter was to barge into other peopleโs homes, one after another, and hope that theyโd let you move in!
Thatโs exactly the situation people create for wild animals when they relocate them. There are no habitats that arenโt already occupied by someone else, and in the wild, those someone-elses are very territorial and often ready to kill strangers who show up unannounced. Relocation is almost always a death sentence for this reason.
Even if an animal has chosen a strange or apparently dangerous spot to live or to raise a family, it has its reasons. It is never okay to take animals away from their home territory even if you believe their home isnโt right. Animals know what theyโre doing when they find places to live. Allow them to exist in peace exactly where they are.

It's raining chipmunks at Halfway Home!
Beth saw this little guy just sitting all alone. Her stepson brought him over to us. He doesn't have any obvious signs of distress so we are letting him snuggle with the other healthy babies.
Our chipmunks are ALL boys and our red squirrels are ALL girls ๐ณ๐
We are behind on names and this little boy and his little neuro friend chippy need names.
Give us a couple names or "like" your favorite suggested below๐๐งก
Thanks again to Beth for helping this tiny friend get help๐ฅฐ
We've had a couple new intakes today.
Michelle found her way to us after a little Grey squirrel ran right up to her for help. The tail was covered in fly strike and the baby was quite hungry. After a bath and hydration, he joined the 2 little reds in the incubator to dry off. The reds loved having a snuggle buddy and climbed right into his cozy sack๐ฅน
Courtney has helped babies in the past and found this tiny chipmunk on the sidewalk & she brought him right over. Unfortunately we have seen their combination of issues before. The baby is presenting with a severe head tilt that is resulting in a slow barrel roll and one of their eyes has a matte finish from whatever was sprayed in the yard๐
Most people would be horrified to know that even though these chemicals may be deemed "safe" once they dry... the person applying them needs to wear protection over their nose and mouth while applying it. Doesn't sound like anything I want around my home, family, children or pets if you ask me๐คทโโ๏ธ

A HUGE Thank-you to Tanya and Leslie for the ongoing support. This mother-daughter team have been a godsend to our rescue.
Tanya is our Halfway Home Chef making sure our Squirrels have blocks (and possum have Peters), and Leslie is an amazing seamstress who makes hanging nests, liners and pouches for our babies. They spoil the heck out of our babies and remove a monumental task from our to-do list.
Each and every thing anyone does for us is so appreciated and no matter how big or small- it goes a long way in helping us with these little ones.
Hi Everyone-
We are still riding the struggle bus with the virus. Everything was looking good, but then my little 3 legged red baby Bubbles, took a nosedive yesterday and went back into the incubator. We switched antibiotics and did a breathing treatment. Unfortunately, she just passed and only 1 sister from that group remains๐
After a week of fighting this- it's SO disheartening. I truly thought they were all on the mend.
The Amazon Fairy came today๐ฅณ
Thanks for all the goodies!! These will be shared among the team for the babies.
My cat would also like to thank you for the amazing box as well๐ฅฐ
Samantha reached out after finding a poor little red squirrel laying in a puddle near a Porta-Potty at her sons sports game. She couldn't just leave him there so she collected him and came to us immediately after describing "little wormy things" This is an absolute emergency because once maggots enter an or***ce on the body, they cause such destruction that is impossible to reverse.
Concurrently we were having a conversation with a second finder who also had red squirrels.
Emily contacted us tonight after a little red squirrel came to her husband for help. They had also found what was suspected to be a dead mother๐ Shortly after they found the first, they found a second. In the photo we could see the fly strike and knew they had been without for a bit. Her husband and son rushed them over to us and we began the painstakingly difficult task of removing all the fly strike from these tiny babies.
None of the babies are in great shape. But they are clean, hydrated and in the incubator warming up๐
Today's storms opened a floodgates of calls and we simply could not keep up. Thank You to my amazing team and colleagues for helping out. It took a village today. If you tried to reach out, or somehow were overlooked?
Please post in the MI Wildlife Help Page.
Unfortunately I have a task at my "real" job tomorrow that is going to make me largely unavailable for the day. I do apologize; as it is a yearly end of August task I cannot avoid ๐ If someone wins the lottery- I would happily quit my paying job for this one๐
Thank you Everyone for your patience and quick action. The heat and lack of power are hard on everyone and thankfully everyone stayed cool.

Sarah contacted us with this little ejected Eastern Grey baby. Sadly the sibling didn't survive the fall. Sarah tried everything we asked and mom didn't come๐
When storms rip through, not only is the main nest destroyed, but often the secondary. If the nest isn't inside of a trunk, and is in the branches of a tree, the 60+ mph winds wipe them out entirely. Reunites have been 100% unsuccessful today๐ญ
Finders have been really good about reaching out with these babies today, we are just teying to place them as quickly as we can.

What fun would August be if we didn't lose power this very last week like we did last year.๐๐ฅด We hope everyone is safe and that no major damage occured!
Good news, the generator is up and running but we cannot run high power things like the microwave, a/c. So, we'll be warming formula in warm water and just be happy to not feed by candlelight ๐
Tomorrow there are going to be OODLES & OODLES of un-nested babies ๐
Protocol for found babies after a storm-
1) Get them WARM and dry. Warm a sock of rice, fill a bottle with warm water, use hand warmers or a heating pad on low. Moms don't want cold babies.
2) Once warm get them into an open shoebox under the tree you think they might have come from.
3) Play the reunite sound every 15 mins for a couple hours and see if mom takes the baby.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/rhFaTdpzh1JgHKUF/?mibextid=oFDknk
4) If you see fly strike, crusty bloody nose or obvious injuries, Do Not Pass Go....send us a message for additional instructions.
5) NO FORMULA!!! Please. No Formula. Grape Pedilyte with a syringe only if you must๐ฉท

Acorn made his way to us after a crazy chain of event. Acorn fell from a tall pine tree. We sent the link to the finder to encourage mom to collect her baby, and she did! But then... he fell again(or mom booted him out)๐ฉ
So they reached out to let us know. But then they thought he had died. But he wasn't dead! So Acorn might actually be a cat with 9 lives๐

We updated our Amazon list with more "squirrel specific" items in the event anyone has the shopping bug today!
We are using baby food banana, whey protein(for blocks) heavy cream powder, as well as cheerios. We are stocked on walnuts for now and want to use up what we have.
Please put out a shallow pan of water for our wild friends. The next few days are going to be pretty unbearable and it can save a life๐
The day got off to a running start with an inbox full of squirrels needing help. Unfortunately this oppressive heat is going to be a driving force this week and one we will have to reckon with :(
Alyssa found this poor little fox squirrel she named Kurama yesterday. Unfortunately the sibling perished and Kurama is in very rough shape. She secured her for the night and got her right out to Kim for help this morning. Prognosis is guarded as the baby is very dehydrated, thin and had fly strike present.
Bailey found this little Eastern Grey yesterday and despite baby calling for mom, the only one to peek in on him was a fox squirrel ๐ She really wanted to get him the help he needed and got him right out to Carol those morning.
Thanks to the quick action of these kind ladiesโค๏ธ as neither baby would have stood any chance at survival๐
****
If someone finds a baby, please tell them to bring the baby in and provide a warm rice sock or a heating pad; babies don't make their own heat and a thin baby can go into shock quickly. Warm and quiet are the top things these tiny fragile babies need.
If you have trouble finding help, you can provide grape pedilyte only via syringe. No pet nurser bottles. As much as people want to feed a baby, we are super gradual with the introduction of formula as it causes diarrhea and even worse dehydration if given before a baby is fully hydrated. Pedilyte is packed with electrolytes and will sustain a baby for a good amount of time until a rehabber can guide you to the next steps.๐ฉท

Update on the virus:
Holding steady tonight; babies snotty noses are not as severe. Appetite is decent for the start of a feed, but still not taking full amounts. They are taking about half of what they should, but accepting hydration in between feeds.
Chipmunks and large red babies seem to be in the clear. Little reds are are hanging in there.
Thanks everyone, have a good night๐ฉท
Very important info.
Not to start the morning off the morning on a grim note, but I wanted to update you guys on one of yesterday's intakes.
Yesterday, we took in a cottontail rabbit that was caught by a cat. Sadly, despite our best efforts, the little one did not make it through the night ๐
Cottontail rabbits, in particular, are incredibly delicate. Their high resting heart rate makes them extremely prone to stress and heart attacks, complicating rehabilitation even further.
Additionally, cat-caught animals are naturally more difficult to rehabilitate because cats carry bacteria in their mouths that can be deadly to small animals.
One of the most concerning is Pasteurella multocida, which can cause severe infections in small mammals. Even a minor bite or scratch can introduce this bacteria, leading to rapid infection and often making it impossible to save the injured animal, despite our best efforts.
With all of the additional stress cottontails experience while being hunted by an animal, secured by a finder, transported and brought into the care of a rehabilitator who then has to triage and treat, cottontail rabbits tend to stop eating.
Whenever a rabbit stops eating, GI stasis is a risk. Stasis can develop in as little as 8 hours.
GI stasis symptoms include loss of appetite, reduced water intake leading to dehydration, infrequent or small droppings, bloating, lethargy and a very abrupt death. GI stasis can be treated with hydration, medication, critical care emergency recovery food, temperature control and encouraging movement. But again, with how easy it is to send cottontails into cardiac arrest by simply just looking at them- You can imagine how the increased hands on care can further spiral the rabbits health downward.
In short, cottontail rabbits are HARD AF to save ๐ฉ
So again, another heartbreaking reminder of how important it is to maintain a close eye on your pets in an effort to keep them away from wildlife.
Let's all do our part to protect these vulnerable animals. ๐
Thank you.
Good Morning-
I believe we have bordetella going through our babies which explains the loss of Waffles the rat and this morning we lost a chipmunk๐๐ช
Our tiny red babies didn't want breakfast so we have started antibiotics for everyone. We will be on hold for babies in the main facility until everyone is acting normal because bordetella is highly contagious and we cannot risk others. Please keep all the babies in your thoughts. I'm absolutely sick over this.
Just wanted to share some progress for Bubbles our 3 legged red squirrel. The scab fell off and revealed perfectly gorgeous healed tissue beneath.
So glad we waited it out to see what nature had planned for her๐ฅณ All three girls have opened their eyes and are nearly double their intake weight๐ฅฐ You can also see how much her coat has changed.
Nadia saw this little jet black Eastern Grey laying in her yard. She was more than willing to go through the reunite steps, but unfortunately, mom never came. She took him over to Kim who happened to have a solo Grey names Ren and they wanted to name this little one Stimpy๐
โค๏ธ
Stimpy, in true jet black Grey fashion was also deeply offended by the offer of hydration formula and is still in denial about needing help. Typical jet black squirrel๐คทโโ๏ธ๐

Jen found us after her youngest son nearly stepped on Crash while out in the yard yesterday. Crash is a teeny tiny nugget of a chipmunk.
Brennan, her other son was so worried about Crash that he even got up to check on him during the night๐ฅบ The kids were really bummed that Crash couldn't stay but knew that by coming to a rescue that Crash would have a family again and a chance at a free life. Jen's daughter Savannah said that since she couldn't keep him, she would adopt a chipmunk in her Roblox game in honor of the tiny little chipmunk that stole their hearts.
It's so hard to not want to keep an adorable little animal like Crash. We are so glad the family made the best choice for him๐ฅฐ

Lisa found little Han (because he is a solo๐)all alone. She has brought us wildlife in the past and was able to get him right over to us which we really appreciate!
He will join Shyanne's Possum Posse so he won't be alone anymore ๐
We had a little chippie transferred to us via Motor City Possum last night; found on sidewalk which is a very common situation because today, Annie reached out with a little chipmunk she found on the sidewalk Saturday.
She offered it some food, but noticed it really wasn't looking great after a couple days and found her way to us. The baby has the typical URI that comes along with summer lawn treatments, so we started him on an antibiotic as well. She brought the fluffy one- and as you can see they are the exactly same size.
We are happy they have each other as our other chip Gizmo is much older (in chipmunk terms) and will no longer enjoy a roommate.... matter of fact he really isn't even a fan of us anymore either๐คทโโ๏ธ๐

The past 24 hrs have been a blur of calls, a few stressful situations and a little chaos๐
Adrienne contacted us with this pair of eastern grey squirrels late last night. Mom was in the tree, but both babies fell from the wind. They couldn't climb back up and Adrienne was worried her dog would get them so she collected the babies to keep them safe. Unfortunately during our conversation last night, my dog got skunked๐ฆจ๐ So I asked that she keep them safe for the night and we would connect the next morning.
Adrienne dropped the babies off this morning and they are on the older side (about 7 weeks) and becoming independent. Unfortunately one of the sisters has a split lip and an injured wrist that she is favoring which explains her inability to climb the tree after her fall๐
We have stabilized the wrist and they reluctantly took hydration. The other baby was especially insulted by the pedilyte as she growled at me the whole time๐

Keely reached out to us with this poor baby rat she found curled up on a sidewalk. She saw a couple tiny punctures on Waffles & couldn't just leave him and found her way to us. Unfortunately on examination we found a very large gaping hole behind Waffles' left leg and another in front of his right. We have cleaned them the best we can and packed with manuka honey as well as started an antibiotic.
Our heart always break for rats because they are the societal underdog. They are cursed with being considered the lowest of the low, vermin riddled with diseases. We have pet rats and have a special place in our heart for them. We find that someone who will take the time to rescue a rat tends to have the biggest hearts of allโค๏ธ
Regardless of your view on rats, they do not deserve to suffer and it's not their fault for what they were born as. Sometimes I feel we as humans make choices that make us a far more despicable species.... so I will forever try to not be the worst of the lot.
Please keep Waffles in your thoughts. He is going to need all the positive vibes he can get.

Halfway Home Rehab is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit and relies entirely on donations. All volunteers are simply that; there is no monetary compensation. The work we do is very rewarding. However, the days are exhausting both physically and emotionally. Without your kindness and generosity, the work we do would simply NOT be possible. Thank you for your support!
