Time for another driving meme!

This time showing the brutal reality of what would happen if we allowed Huskies to drive cars! Admittedly, it would be fun to watch such a driver, but also probably unsafe. Speaking of being safe, if you're driving this weekend be careful! New Years can be a chaotic time on the road so make sure you're safe and your Husky isn't driving!

“Autistic individuals will always have varying challenges and varying levels of difficulty in learning how to drive. But I know very well it’s possible to make it work much more often than most people expect. The best thing you can do is know yourself and what works for you and doesn’t work for you before getting behind the wheel.” - Andrew Arboe, Founder of Driving with Autism

Let’s talk about Parental Involvement and how it relates to being autistic and learning to drive.

For many individuals, and particularly for autistic individuals, parental involvement is often a large piece of their learning to drive journey. Because of that it is important to create a sense of understanding between the individual learning to drive and their parents, especially when an autistic individual wants to drive but their parents are worried or concerned about their safety. This can be one of the toughest parts of learning to drive, and we haven’t even gotten to the driving part yet!

We at Driving With Autism believe the answer to this difficult situation isn’t to leave parents out of this process, but to bring them into it on the autistic individuals terms. There are likely mixed emotions in the parent and autistic individual, ranging from excitement to anxiety. It is often very important for parents to play a supportive role to help their new driver ease into driving and accept the associated challenges. Parents can be a new drivers best resource, and we believe it’s extremely valuable for new autistic drivers to have that resource whenever possible. Support from parents isn’t always necessary to obtain a license, but it can make getting a license a more doable and less anxiety ridden process.

This is why the second topic we cover in our webinar Training Series is Parental Involvement. Based on past consultations with parents, this webinar, designed and given by Andrew Arboe, autistic individual and Founder of Driving With Autism, will review the challenges outlined above and strategies to overcome them. This webinar will directly address fears and worries that parents typically have while also discussing how to help their child succeed at reaching their goals as an autistic individual. Learning to drive is always easier with a supportive team, and this webinar seeks to start building that team.

By covering all of these different concepts we help develop a clear path forward that feels doable and exciting. We do this because it is important to feel like driving is possible as well as something that is exciting and worth learning. The purpose of these courses is to help individuals ease into the idea of considering driving as a transportation option, as well as help them make informed decisions regarding learning to drive. Beyond that we hope to assist in proactively creating solutions to counter any fears an autistic individual or their family may have. At the end of these courses individuals will leave with an action plan for moving forward and making progress.

We are less than a month away from the beginning of our 7-Part webinar on Driving With Autism! These virtual courses are going to cover many important topics such as motivation, managing anxieties and sensory difficulties, important financial basics, and many more topics related to learning to drive as an autistic individual! They will all be taught by the founder of Driving With Autism Andrew Arboe and will be approached from the perspective of being an autistic individual following their own unique path in learning to drive.

“I got my license when I was 25 years old; my coworker is just getting her permit at 24. I’ve met many people that began their driving journey decades after their peers, including one person who was 40! Their experiences are proof that getting your license is possible at any age!” - Andrew Arboe

Let’s talk about Motivation and how it relates to being autistic and learning to drive.

Motivation is a vital component of learning to drive. Without the want to learn, it’s hard to provide the energy and dedication it takes to really learn to drive. This is even more true for autistic individuals since learning to drive includes unexpected and unique challenges. Because of this it is always important to consider and explore multiple sources of motivation. It can be extremely beneficial to take the time to explore what works as a source of motivation, particularly relating to learning to drive. Learning to drive can open up so many new doors, but they must be explored and understood in order to create a sense of excitement and investment. And excitement and investment lead to motivation. When effectively motivated, we autistic individuals can often do things we never thought possible, and even surprise those around us.

This is why the first topic we cover in our webinar Training Series is Motivation. We discuss the opportunities involved with learning to drive as well as the skills one will develop whether they end up driving or not. In this particular course we discuss why transportation is important and the barriers that can prevent someone from driving. Strategies for combatting those barriers are discussed as well.

We have a brand new blog post up on our website!

Learning to drive is a completely unique and individualized experience for everyone, it’s a simple truth of driving.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that so often when autistic individuals are considering if driving is right for them, they are teenagers and their parents or guardians are deeply involved in these decisions. As autistic individuals growing up, we often feel we are being left behind by our peers because we’re not reaching all of the same milestones at the same time. This is very true for learning to drive especially, and it can be very difficult to accept that our paths to understanding if driving is for us are different than the paths most others follow.

Driving with Autism understands this. This is why we have written a blog post directly for parents of autistic teenagers and young adults who are having difficulty getting comfortable with their autistic child learning to drive.

In this blog post we discuss advice for navigating the journey to driving with your teen, including ways you can support them in exploring their own independence. This blog posts also provides insight into how we will be approaching and discussing the topic of Parental Involvement in the Driving With Autism 7-Part webinar series.

I, Andrew Arboe am proud to announce the official launch of Driving with Autism! My next step in my continued work in transportation!

Driving with Autism is an educational company that will help any autistic individual ease into the idea of driving as a transportation option. Through a series of courses, each individual involved will develop their own unique and individualized plan for exploring how driving may fit into their life. Each course goes over several topics that help make the unknown knowable, and help autistic individuals make educated decisions on if driving is best for them, and if so how to do it safest. These are all topic that I have now covered for years, and I know are important and worth exploring. Driving with Autism is also excited to collaborate with various autism organizations and driving schools nationwide to make a difference in those communities. This way, resources can be created for future drivers in all 50 states, no exceptions!

This all started with my personal challenge of learning how to drive in the context of being autistic. It was a difficult challenge but through perseverance and support I overcame it. I decided to give presentations to help other autistic individuals overcome this challenge, or even just to help them consider driving as a possibility for them for the first time. This eventually led to me doing work with a local driving school for their program and holding online consultations with families nationwide through my work for Planning Across the Spectrum. Now, I am proud to announce a brand-new company that is going to be focused on continuing my work in transportation. As of today, Driving with Autism is officially launching!

We currently offer package deals where one can get access to the courses and another package which offers additional resources and support for new drivers to take advantage of. We are here to help you embrace the creation of your own roadmap for driving.

You can check out our website below and our courses will be launching in January 2022!
