Happy humpday, Friends! ๐ Let's learn a little bit about muscovite today. This crystal interesting history and unique properties make it a true standout!Muscovite, also known as "white mica," has been adored for centuries. Its name hails from Moscow, where it was commonly used as window glass back in the day. Despite its delicate, sheet-like structure, muscovite was valued for its transparency and ability to be split into thin, flexible layers. Imagine peering through a window made of sparkling pages from nature!
You can find glittering muscovite all over: from the mountains of Brazil (where ours were mined) to the depths of India. As we just read, one of the coolest things about muscovite is its unique structure. It forms in thin, flexible sheets that can be peeled apart, showcasing nature's very own glittery layers. The sparkles you see come from the mineral's perfect cleavage, which means it breaks along flat planes. Perfect for adding a touch of nature's bling to your collection or project! Muscovite comes in various colors, from silver and gold to pink and green, making each piece a unique treasure.
Fun fact: it's also sometimes called "isinglass" due to its glassy appearance and transparency. While it might seem fragile, its historical use as window glass highlights its surprising durability in thin layers. So, whether you're drawn to its glimmer or its fascinating history, muscovite is a gem that certainly deserves a spot in your collection. Ocean Jasper is a rare and beautiful type of orbicular or spherulitic chalcedony, known for its distinctive spherical patterns and vibrant colors. Sourced exclusively from the Analalava district in Madagascar, it comes from two key deposits: Marovato, famous for its colorful orbs and translucency, and Kabamby, noted for its consistent green and yellow hues with geometric patterns.
Did you know that in ancient times, amethyst was as valuable as diamonds? The rarity and deep purple color of amethyst made it highly prized among royalty and the wealthy. It wasn't until large deposits were discovered in Brazil that amethyst became more widely available and affordable, allowing more people to enjoy its stunning beauty. Give me amethyst any day!

๐ Oh, Glow Up!๐
Did you know that some calcite minerals have a fascinating trait that can also aid identification? When exposed to UV light, they can glow with an incredible range of colors! This natural wonder is due to impurities within the calcite, which react to ultraviolet light and illuminate the bonus beauty of this versatile crystal.

๐ Crystal of the Week: Calcite ๐
Good morning, Froggies! This weekโs spotlight is on calcite, a stunningly versatile and abundant mineral.
Geological Insight: Calcite, a stable polymorph of calcium carbonate (CaCOโ), appears in various colors and forms. It can be found just about anywhere, differing from aragonite in its crystal structure but not composition, which we talked about a few weeks back ๐.
Appearance: Often seen in rhombohedral crystals, which resemble skewed cubes with slanted faces.
Identification Tips: Calcite is soft, scoring a 3 on the Mohs scale, remember this handy chart? It can be scratched with a copper coin and leaves a white streak on a streak plate (unglazed porcelain - like the underside of the lid on the toilet tank ๐
๐คช)
Spotting Fakes: Calcite is abundant and rarely faked. Common mix-ups occur with celestite or angelite.
โจ Fun Fact: Ancients used calcite to craft ossuaries, ornate "bone boxes" for human remains.๐ฟ

๐ Caring for Your Amethyst: Tips and Tricks ๐
Hi Froggies! Let's keep the spotlight on amethyst and talk about maintenance! Amethyst is a beautiful crystal that requires minimal care to maintain its beauty and longevity. Here are some essential tips for taking care of your Amethyst, geologist approved!
1. Important! Avoid Direct Sunlight. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause Amethyst to fade. This is because Amethyst, which, remember, is a variety of quartz that contains iron impurities that give it its purple color. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can alter these impurities, leading to color loss over time. So, keep your Amethyst away from windowsills or any place where it will receive constant direct sunlight.
2. Cleaning Your Amethyst. Clean your Amethyst with lukewarm water, a mild dish soap, and soft brush. This is great at removing sticker residue and fingerprints. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth. I recommend linen to avoid lint. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleansers, as they can damage the surface of your Amethyst. Consider investing in a good electric air duster. It works well for quick dust removal from Amethyst and other crystals, ensuring they stay clean without the need for frequent washing.
3. Displaying Your Amethyst. Place your Amethyst in a dry place, again, away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading. Make sure it won't knock against harder crystals, for example aquamarine, the corrundums ruby and sapphire, topaz etc. Amethyst is pretty tough, though. Be sure to not expose your Amethyst to extreme temperatures or sudden temperature changes, which can cause cracks.
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! You'll find these tips are useful for many crystals! Speaking of, my crystals could use a good dusting ๐

๐ Crystal of the Week: Amethyst ๐
Dive into the mesmerizing world of Amethyst, a stunning crystal known for its rich purple hue. This week will be all about amethyst. Did you know that Amethyst is a variety of quartz? It's found in many shades, from very light to purple so deep it looks black! Amethyst has been popular through the ages and in many cultures. The Bible describes amethyst as one of the twelve stones in the High Priest's breastplate and again as being the final stone in the foundation of New Jerusalem.
Where is it found and how is it formed? Quick answers, all over with lots of time, pressure, heat and a little "contamination" ๐คช. Amethyst is commonly found in geodes and alluvial deposits (earth and sand left behind from rivers and streams or flooding) in many places, but particularly in Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar and even in the USA. It forms in volcanic rocks when silica-rich solutions seep into cavities and undergo a slow crystallization process resulting in its beautiful purple color due to iron impurities and natural irradiation.
Fun Fact: Amethyst gets its name from the Greek word "amethystos," which means "not intoxicated." It was believed to prevent intoxication and overindulgence.
Tips: Genuine Amethyst will often have color zoning, with varying shades of purple, while fakes may have a consistent color throughout. Another telltale sign is the hardnessโAmethyst should be able to scratch glass. Be cautious of overly bright or vivid colors, which might indicate dyeing. Amethyst can also undergo several common treatments to enhance its appearance. One common treatment is heat treatment, which can lighten the color or change it to yellow, creating Citrine. Another is irradiation, which can intensify the purple color. Make sure you have a transparent crystal dealer!
Ok, my thumbs are tired, have a great start to the week, Froggies! ๐
๐
Hello Froggies! Happy Friday! Iโm reaching out with an important update regarding one of my previously offered crystals, widely sold as Sphalerite. Hold onto your hats! After a lot of research stemming from an informative resource, I now know that these specimens are actually a beautiful combination of quartz and/or chalcedony (sometimes with fluorite or other inclusions that affect color) on mixed matrices, not Sphalerite, which is very different, as you can see in the pictures. When this material was discovered close to an actual sphalerite mine, the name was incorrectly attributed to this material and stuck. While this was unexpected, I assure you that your piece remains a genuine, natural crystal, boasting its own unique beauty and properties. You guys know that I take my commitment to transparency and education seriously. I understand the importance of accurate information in building trust and value in our community. To show my appreciation for your understanding, please pm me for a $25 voucher if you have purchased this material from me. I'm also here to answer any questions you might have about this update or any other concerns. Please look forward to an in-depth post about these two specimens. Thank you for your continued support and trust.
Warm regards, your crystal lady, Ty ๐
