o 1850 – Jan 24, 1859 – Unification of Moldova and Wallachia (aka the Little Union) following the election of Alexandru loan Cuza as the Prince of both principalities.
o 1860 – Jan. 31, 1865 - The United States Congress passes the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery.
o 1870 – Jan. 3, 1870 - Construction begins on the Brooklyn Bridge. The iconic bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York city.
o 1880 – January 28,1880 – Thomas Edison and team received the patent for the incandescent lightbulb which would become the primary light source for millions around the world.
o 1890 – December, 1890 – The Wounded Knee Massacre took place in South Dakota at the hands of U.S. Calvary troops.

Tonight we collectively say goodbye to 2023 and welcome in the new year. From all of us here at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad, we want to say thank you! It is because of your support that we can continue to provide a quality experience for visitors from around the world every year! We are truly grateful for all of the support, like & shares on social media, and simply just spreading the word about this gem we get to call home!

We're entering into 2024 with a feeling of renewed support and we hope to give that back to the community in 2024. Thank you again! Happy New Year everyone!

Reminder: The Village and train will be CLOSED AFTER TODAY except for specific events outside of our normal program. We officially open back up to the public Memorial Day weekend of 2024 so keep a lookout for our event flyers!

The Village is open from 4:00pm - 9:00pm with train departures at 5:00, 5:50, 6:40, and 7:30pm.

A very Merry Christmas from Santa and Mrs. Claus! They’re headed back to the North Pole to prepare for their world adventure! We’re thankful for the time they spent with us! Till next year!

Celery for Christmas??

It was on this day in 1856 that the first order of celery was served at a restaurant (the Burdick House in Kalamazoo) in Michigan.

Brought to Michigan from Scotland by a man named George Taylor, his celery farm would become the launching point for celery production here in the state.

What's your favorite way to eat celery? We're preferential to "ants on a log"!

On this day in 1862, the first train to enter Flint rolled the tracks. This was such a momentous occasion, a large party was held at the Carlton House - a banquet hall located downtown just north of the Flint river.

While many assume the rail line would have came from the south, it actually came from Saginaw to Flint! The line to Detroit did not happen for several years!

The party was later quoted as being "far in advance of any previous public social affair that been held in Flint." (The book of the Golden Jubilee of Flint, Michigan 1855-1905, pg. 113)
