College Readiness: How to Know if Your Teen Is Prepared 08/13/2023

“I sent three kids to college without fully thinking about whether they were ready. When I saw some red flags in high school — missed homework assignments and poor time management — I chose to ignore those problems, rationalizing that there is a lot of growth between ages 17 and 18, and these issues would work themselves out.

I reasoned that if my kids were accepted to a college, they must be ready. They seemed to recount their life stories in those applications; indeed, the college admissions committee would know if they were up to the task.

Time works magic, but not that much magic. All of the college/teen experts I consulted made the same point: the signs of a lack of college readiness are almost always evident in high school. Few students develop problems freshman year without exhibiting any symptoms in high school.

How do you know if your teen is ready for college?

Students’ information to colleges says a great deal about their academic readiness while still living at home surrounded by supportive families, friends, and high school teachers, but it does not reveal much more. Emotionally ready? Mature enough? Psychologically prepared? How do you know if your kid is ready for college? Applications do not answer these questions.

It is all too easy to lose sight of our goals as parents. As we watch our kids go through high school with their class, we envision them starting college, or the next step in their lives, with their cohort.

But going to college is only part of what we want. Thriving in college is our goal. Attaining that goal means beginning college when our teen is ready, not when their classmates are.

How can parents distinguish between a teen’s usual stumbles and troubles and the deeper problems that may preclude success in college?”

Are there objective, challenging questions parents can ask themselves when determining if their high school junior or senior will be prepared to start college with his class? And finally, what, if anything, can parents do when they recognize their student is not ready for college?

College Readiness: How to Know if Your Teen Is Prepared Experts agree that the signs pointing to a lack of college readiness are almost always evident in high school.

Anything is possible with God! Dr. Mason’s book, Woke Church is excellent, btw.

I’ve said this before! I was diagnosed with a learning disability in elementary and told I couldn’t learn. I was in remedial classes and slower learners groups through my first year of college, BUT GOD! I finished undergrad being on the deans list and got 2 advanced degrees after that. NEVER let a diagnosis or limitation stop you from God’s purpose on your life. 7 books in and 3 more in the pipeline

They are not quite up to grade level in Math or English or both, or it takes them a few years to get through what is traditionally a one-year program. The basics and therapy eat through your week, and there is no time for extracurriculars, and the list of concerns goes on. Special Needs parents have unique life challenges, including creating a Special Needs Transcript for their High School years."

Act Now: Stop Bill that Removes Parents From Medical Decision-making 02/16/2021

I am not an anti-vaccine proponent. My children received all of their shots, spread out. This bill should be a concern to all parents, no matter where you fall on the vaccine issue. Now we have to stay informed and let our voices be heard like never before.

*****
The District of Columbia City Council passed a bill (B23-0171) that allows children as young as 11 years old to consent to vaccinations without their parent’s knowledge, even if the parent has already declined the vaccine for medical or religious reasons.

The bill goes further and requires the vaccine provider and the child’s school to conceal from the parent that the child was vaccinated, specifically preventing an insurer from sending an explanation of benefits listing the vaccination.

HSLDA does not hold a position on whether or not children should be vaccinated. We simply believe that parents should have the right to make that decision for their families, just as parents should have the right to direct the education of their children.

By undermining parental liberty, this bill sets a dangerous precedent that could be replicated across the nation. The notion that 11-year-old children must be enabled to make decisions contrary to the wishes of their loving parents has grave consequences for both the well-being of children and individual freedom. And these consequences extend far beyond the limited area of vaccinations.

Help protect the right of loving parents to choose what's best for their children

Yet, this bill would undermine the concerns of loving parents by permitting young children to make certain, potentially life-altering medical decisions, and then concealing these decisions from parents.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
This bill (DC 23-171) was passed by the DC City Council last year and transmitted to Congress on February 1, 2021. It will become law in the District unless Congress passes a veto resolution in the next 30 legislative days (around March 19, 2021).

Unique to DC, legislative acts must be sent to both the United States Senate and House of Representatives for review prior to becoming law. During this review period, Congress may enact a joint resolution disapproving of the bill. If the joint resolution does not pass within 30 legislative days, the bill officially becomes law.

So time is running out to stop this bill from becoming law, but you still have the opportunity to make a difference.

Congressman Michael Cloud and Senator Mike Lee have introduced the required veto resolutions, SJRes. 7 and HJRes. 25.

To stop this attack on parental liberty and children’s health, these resolutions need to pass. And that is where you come in.

Please go here to contact your representative and senators today and ask them to support the joint resolutions to veto DC Bill 23-171.
