Co-Regulation
Listen as Andy Nelson, Director of Spiritual Life, explains the concept of co-regulation and how it helps children move from a dysregulated state to a calm one. Just as a parent soothes a crying baby by holding and comforting them, we as parents can support our teenagers by maintaining a posture of calm and connection, even when they are having a hard time. By understanding and practicing co-regulation, we can guide our children towards emotional stability.

Dysregulation is a state where a child shifts from their thinking brain to their fight, flight or freeze response. This can manifest as tantrums or intense emotional outbursts, showing that the child is not in a calm and settled state. By recognizing and understanding dysregulation, we can better support our children through these challenging moments, helping them manage their emotions and return to a state of calm.

Parents, you are loved by God. When you understand that and believe that, you can offer that same type of grace and love to your children. We hope you enjoy the following episode in our Connection in the Chaos series.
