Region 2 5A Girls Shot Put ⚫️- Carly 9th place
Carly was just over a foot from making finals and threw 33’11.5” today on her third attempt. Each throw was an improvement on the last, and I would have loved to have seen what she could do with a few more attempts.
🫡 Congrats on a great 9th grade season!

Region 2 5A Girls Discus 🥏- Brooklyn 9th place Brooklyn had her third best throw of the year- 114’11”, to open her competition. Unfortunately, she did not improve upon that mark and missed the finals by less than a foot. Many of the girls improved their distances in rounds 4-6. Such a bummer to not get three more attempts; but a very respectable outing for her nonetheless. As seen in her video below, Brooklyn was very anxious to throw and her technique deteriorated from previous meets. After a well deserved break, she’ll be focusing on full throws with the intent to win this meet next year and move on to State.
Congrats to Brooke on her first Varsity win today with a toss of 102’2.75”. She wants a bigger mark like what she sometimes gets in practice, but ultimately it’s a competition amongst who is there and scoring points for the team. Nothing wrong with a win. While she could be collecting medals at every meet as a JV participant, she’s getting valuable experience competing against upper classmen.
Jesuit Dallas Sheaner Relays Results By far the biggest meet for any of the club throwers to attend. Big throws on both the boys and girls side. Carly had her second best shot put mark in her young career with a 36’8”. I know she was looking for more, especially after being measured out to 39’2” this week in practice, but the harsh reality is not every meet is a PR setting meet. It’s there, and we’ll get it soon enough. Carly also threw the discus and went out to 107’5”. It’s her third best toss. She continues to show consistency in this event and it will add to the foundation she builds for future long throws. Something I was late on learning, is that last weeks double PRs of 38’8” and 115’10” earned her Crandall Athlete of the Week. Awesome job. I would also like to give a shout out to Deserae Charles of Forney (I do not coach her) for going big in the shot put with 41’3”. She destroyed her previous best of 37’10”. A 3’5” PR in the shot is insane. Below is her throw.
Ennis Bluebonnet Relays Results PR alerts for several kids! 💪 ⚫️🥏💪🥳 In Varsity Girls Shotput, Brooklyn had three PR throws with the furthest being pushed out 21” past her old best. She broke the 30’ line with a heave of 30’1”. Not bad for a 9th grade XC runner. She’s less than a foot off her 6lbs shot PR from last year. I always think matching your old PR when moving up in weight is a great goal to have. Nice going kid. In Varsity Girls Discus Brooklyn battled for a 10’ PR!!! She went from flirting with that 💯 ft line to crushing it with 109’7”. She’s #5 now all time for Forney HS. At Wednesday’s practice something clicked for Brooklyn and she had 7 consecutive throws out around 110’. She barely foot fouled a throw around 110’, had a couple of high 90’ throws and a couple of scratches before stepping in the ring for her last throw of the competition to finally set her new all time mark. Reyn got a lifetime best discus throw of 80’6” and Morgan PRd again going 93’7”. Leah found a PR in JV discus at 75’6”, up 10’ from last year. With the up and coming talent of discus throwers at Warren, the Varsity Girl’s Discus is going to be one tough team to get on. What a great problem to have!!!
Northwest Texan Invitational Meet Results A couple of club kids finally got their chance to compete, and they represented Forney well at the Northwest Texan Invitational in Justin. Brooklyn was all set to join the 100’ club in disc, but ran into trouble early with two sector fouls. She managed a 98’8” to place 4th. This is technically a 13’ PR, but she was upset as she was anticipating a bit more. Brooklyn was the only 9th grade girl to compete in varsity disc. She had to run the 800m during shot put and missed her first two throws. She still mustered a toss of 28’2.25”, which is two inches off her best set two weeks ago at the practice meet. She finished her night running the 400m. Leah, 10th grade, came into the year with a disc PR around 65’. All three of her throws exceeded that with the best effort measuring 71’11”. We’ve had a few practices together and she’s really shown interest in improving. Congrats on the PR! David, 12th Grade, and Leah’s brother, was a bit off his PR in disc but still managed a 1st place finish in jv boys disc with a mark of 125’8”. He placed 6th in the shot with a put of 36’8”. Below is his discus video. Carly was rained out of her meet this week as well as the throwers at Warren.
It was freezing out tonight but Crandall Carly is wasting no time coming off basketball earlier this week and setting her eyes on a PR in 13 days at her first HS meet. She’s been constantly 10-15 further than last years best effort. High expectations for her this year.
A registered camp attendee’s father has sent a few videos my way for review. With his permission I’m sharing a compilation of a few of the throws with some still frames/comments in the comment section. If you have a couple of videos you’d like to have reviewed, post them to the page under visitor posts. I’ll have to admit, I’m not tech savvy and don’t know how to voice over nor do I know how to do all the fancy lines or overlays you might see elsewhere. I do much better coaching in person.
Tonight we moved on from the “step back” throw and put our sights on the glide. But first a new drill to help get our center foot under us in a power position. The A Frame drill starts with a wider than usual power position stance, then we mimic the glide where the center foot is pulled in underneath us and immediately into a throw. They weren’t all pretty, but baby steps. Proud to see the work they’re putting in early into this off season.
