The Paradox of Being a Musician – It’s The View From the Road

This week, with the school year winding down but performances coming soon, Drew examines the fundamental paradox of being a musician. Namely that when others are at play you are working.

Also, we talk about the implications of deferred maintenance, specifically with larger instruments and the sharing of these instruments between schools.

UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival is this week (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) so if you are going to be there stop by the booth! Peter has a bunch of cool things going on that you will not want to miss.

It’s Easier to Keep Up than Catch Up. It’s The View From the Road
This week we’re talking about school owned instruments. “Deferred maintenance” is a term sometimes used to repairs that are not in the budget right now, but Drew talks about why putting off repairs now will likely cost more than money in the future. Much like running a 5k, it’s easier to keep up than catch up. Also, if you have not yet felt the disruption in the global supply chain, you will at some point this year. Drew is reading a fantastic book, Arriving Today by Christopher Mims, which explains how we got here and why the solution is not as rapid as the problem. #ViewFromTheRoad #ArrivingToday https://www.amazon.com/Arriving-Today-Factory-Everything-Changed-ebook/dp/B08TWXFTHL https://youtu.be/MQwntLxW_Jk

The Brazilian Surdo Drum
Come with Peter as he explores Pearl’s Surdo Drum, the bass voice of their Brazilian Percussion line. With its lightweight shell, tunable cloth heads, and big booming bass sound, this drum will get attention whether played standing still or on the go using the included strap. #DrumsWest #Pearl #PearlSurdo #PearlBrazilianPercussion https://youtu.be/tZMAvxRANI8

A Conga that Fits in a Backpack? Yes!
Can you really get a conga sound from such a small drum? Minus the bass tones, yes! No longer do you need to haul around a 30 pound drum and stand to play congas. And because it fits the basket of any snare stand, incorporating conga sound into your drum set playing has never been easier! Let Peter show you how. #LPCompactConga #DrumsWest https://youtu.be/FH4VnOtCMhc

The Velocity is Increasing! It’s The View From the Road
The weather has finally improved! Does it mean Spring is here? Drew is skeptical… This week we’re talking about repairs! It always seems like a good idea to get your horn fixed during Spring Break (less than two weeks!), but rest assured many have the same idea. The earlier your instrument is in our shop the faster it will be repaired, so get it in asap! Also, instrument tryout nights! We’re happy to provide stuff (instruments, sanitizing supplies, etc) but have a limited ability to provide people. We recommend reaching out to friends, neighbors, enemies, or your favorite university and see who is ready to help kids learn to love music! #ViewFromTheRoad https://youtu.be/1l5n6cqnQ1A

Baby It’s Cold Outside! It’s The View From the Road
It was a frigid day on the road this week, with the thermometer reading negative zero degrees (yes, really). Next week we will be at the CBA events at Fort Collins High School and Fossil Ridge High School, so look for our tables there. Also, Drew talks more about instruments tryouts and the difference between the way kids learn a new skill (to explore) and adults learn a new skill (to exploit). As we help kids choose instruments let’s be sure to keep that sense of wonder and exploration in mind! #ViewFromTheRoad https://youtu.be/babu5q7irYI

Podcast Conversation with UNC Music Education Students Jam and Caden
University of Northern Colorado Music Education students Jam and Caden stopped by the booth at CMEA 2022! Braden talked with them about how to get started podcasting on a budget, including leveraging free software for video and audio editing. They also talked about instrument recording techniques, specifically how microphone placement can be just as (or more) important than the microphone itself, as well as how this technology is useful not only for livestreaming performances but also in rehearsal as a tool for students to self-assess their playing. https://youtu.be/iBrARXJ8QsA

It’s Groundhog Day. Again. And it’s Your Weekend Update!
Much like in the Bill Murray film, we got hit with snow on Groundhog Day, canceling school and closing the store. While it was nice to have a day with the family, tomorrow came and we are back to work! https://youtu.be/ReqUZUqGyK0 Beyond the Stage With Lesson Studio Owner Danielle Gillespie (Part 1) Drew had the opportunity to speak with Danielle Gillespie at the 2022 Colorado Music Educator’s Association conference in Colorado Springs. Danielle is owner of Music @ Mainstreet, a private music studio in Parker, CO, and has an extensive background in vocal music. An Alum of the Colorado Springs Children's Chorale and heavily involved in musical theatre all through school, she went on to study classical voice performance at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music, with advanced coursework in vocal pedagogy and choral conducting. In Part 1 of our conversation, we talk about the winding path that took her from studying international business to owning a lesson studio. We discuss how her studio creates a network for performers and encourages participation in the local musical community, how quitting piano as a kid has helped her to inspire students to stick with music making, and how online lessons made weathering the storm of the last two years possible. #Music@Mainstreet https://www.musicatmainstreet.com/ https://youtu.be/pHzBpWpPqeQ https://anchor.fm/drew-holmes/episodes/Episode-8---Lesson-Studio-Owner-with-Danielle-Gillespie-e1drrdc *AND* SONOR Orff SMART Series – Orff Instruments Reimagined Orff instruments are bulky, unwieldy, and hard to store, right? Wrong! The New SONOR Orff SMART Series solves these problems and more. At the 2022 CMEA conference Drew caught up with Bob Newhouse from KHS and saw this new instrument firsthand. The compact stackable body, light weight, and folding legs are amazing features, but that is just the beginning. In this video you will also see the internal stor
