KING CONCERT IN NEW LOCATION SUNDAY EVENING:
The Karl L. King Municipal Band will continue to make Sunday evenings special in Fort Dodge with their weekly band concerts, starting at 7:30 pm. Because of the Shellbration event on Saturday, July 15 being held at the Band Shell, the Sunday evening, the July 16 band concert was asked to relocate to another site.
That concert will now be held at the Karl L. King Memorial Park, located in downtown Fort Dodge in front of the Public Library. This area was formerly known as the City Square. There is still no admission charge, with these concerts being provided by the City of Fort Dodge. An ice cream social will still be held before this concert, starting around 6:30 pm, sponsored by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Conductor of the King Band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, currently in his 21st season, with Dan Cassady serving as the Assistant Conductor and Paul Bloomquist handling the announcing duties.
This July 16 concert will highlight several different styles of Band music. Classical band works on the evening’s concert include Armida Overture by the Austrian composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical period in music. This opera, which debuted in 1784, was considered by Haydn himself to be the most famous of his many operas.
Well known popular selections will also be heard, and include highlights from the successful Broadway musical, The Phantom of the Opera, along with the music from a very popular group in the 1960’s with The Sounds of the Tijuana Brass.
Karl L. King’s music is always a popular treat, and there will be some on this concert to enjoy, including The Goldman Band March and the Royal Hippodrome Galop. Other marches on the evening program include the concert opener, Amparito Roca, an exciting Mexican march by Jaime Texidor; Fred Jewell’s circus march, Gentry’s Triumphal; and the evening’s closing selection, The Last Word, by G.H. Huffine.
Two special features await the listener during this concert. First will be Shari Netz, a vocalist from Manson, who will sing the popular classic, Blue Moon, followed by Natalie Cole’s up-tempo recording of Orange-Colored Sky. Also the members of the trombone section will be playing Al Sweet’s Sweet Trombone Rag. Sweet was an American composer, and conductor. From 1906-1911, he was leader of the band for the Ringling Brothers Circus.
A special tribute during this concert will be made to Tom Tierney, who recently passed away, with the playing of Karl King’s dirge, Remembrance. Mr. Tierney could be seen at many of the band concerts through the years taking beautiful pictures of each event which were then posted on his own personal pages, along with the King Band’s page.
Closing the concert will be The Star-Spangled Banner. These band concerts will continue for one more Sunday evening on July 23, when the Karl King band will return to the Band Shell in Oleson Park once again for their season finale concert.

KING BAND CONCERTS OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE:
Each week during June and July, the Karl L. King Municipal Band presents their Sunday evening concerts in Oleson Park at the Karl L. King Band Shell, and each week they present a wide variety of band music to hopefully appeal to all ages and musical tastes. This week’s concert on Sunday, July 9th, will be no exception! Beginning at 7:30 pm, Conductor Jerrold P. Jimmerson and Assistant Conductor Dan Cassady will offer selections in many different styles during this hour-long program.
If marches are your favorites, then you will hear several, from Karl King’s Neddermeyer Triumphal, J.C. Heed’s circus march In Storm and Sunshine, and Roland F. Seitz’s March Grandioso, to the unusual style of Pierre Leemans with his March of the Belgian Paratroopers.
Many people enjoy those classic overtures that the band plays each week, and this concert will include Austrian composer Franz von Suppe’s “Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna”. This light-hearted operetta includes lots of enjoyable music, and this overture is equally at home in the opera hall, on the concert stage, in the Band Shell, or even in an animated Bugs Bunny cartoon!
Other people enjoy the various Karl King compositions that are presented. Included in this concert will be King’s beautiful aerial waltz, Mystic Night. Still others wait for those fast-paced circus galops, which this week will feature King’s Excelsior. There will even be a beautiful slower selection titled On A Hymnsong of Philip Bliss, based on a traditional church hymn as arranged by David Holsinger.
Broadway musicals always get those toes tapping, and this week will include Highlights from Man of La Mancha. Guest vocal soloist with the band on this selection will be Collin Ellsbury, a 2019 graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High. Mr. Ellsbury is a 2023 graduate of Oklahoma City University, earning the combined degrees of a B.M. in Music Theater and Vocal Performance as well as a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science. Collin’s resumé highlights include performing in New York City as a national semifinalist for the NATS Music Theatre Competition, appearances in both The Sound of Music and La Bohème at the Bay View Festival in Michigan, and performances at the Kimmel Center in Pennsylvania with the Broadway Dreams Foundation. In the fall, Mr. Ellsbury will begin work on his M.M. in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at New York University, emphasizing Music Theatre performance, with an anticipated graduation date of 2025.
Included also on the evening will be an up-tempo look at music from the major swing bands of the 1930’s and 1940’s, capturing the essence of the Jazz Age. Each band in that era had their “signature sound”, with these various sounds all coming together in an original selection titled “Jitterbug!” by Robert Buckley.
Persons attending these concerts are reminded to bring along their own lawn chairs, since there is no seating provided. These summer concerts are provided for everyone free of admission charge by the City of Fort Dodge. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church also offers a homemade ice cream social before the concert starts each week, beginning at 6:30 pm. In case of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled at the starting time.
JULY CONCERTS CONTINUE FOR KING BAND:
The month of July promises to be another busy and exciting one for the members of the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge. Director Jerrold P. Jimmerson has recently announced events that are scheduled to occur on the first four Sunday evenings during the month.
All concerts begin at 7:30 pm, and are free to the public, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. The concerts on July 2, July 9, and July 23 will be held at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Due to the Shellabration concert at the Band Shell on July 15, the concert on Sunday, July 16th had to be moved to Karl L. King Memorial Park downtown in front of the Fort Dodge Public Library.
The homemade ice cream social provided by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church precedes each concert, even the July 16th one, when it will still be available downtown. Also, there may not be public restrooms available at the Library for the July 16 concert.
On July 2nd, the King Band will present a special concert of patriotic songs honoring America’s Independence Day. Music from the exciting “Overture Solennelle 1812” by Tschaikovsky is guaranteed to bring about a renewed sense of patriotism. Along with marches by Sousa and King to familiar melodies in “Broad Stripes and Bright Stars”, plus a musical tribute to jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong titled “Satchmo!”, this concert will feature something for everybody. A special performance by our Trumpet Trio on “Bugler’s Holiday” will delight all those in attendance. Closing out this concert will be America’s national march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever”, always an inspiration to all who hear it.
The July 9th concert will again present lots of variety, from Franz von Suppe’s classic overture, “Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna” to a tribute to the Jazz era with Robert Buckley’s “Jitterbug!” The music of Karl King is always on every concert and includes his circus march, “Neddermeyer Triumphal” along with a beautiful aerial waltz, “Mystic Night” and the circus galop, “Excelsior”. A local Fort Dodge Senior High graduate, Collin Ellsbury, will join the band to sing highlights from the popular Broadway musical, “Man of La Mancha”.
The concert on July 16th promises even more surprises. First, the concert has been moved downtown instead of being at the Band Shell. Conductor Jimmerson is planning another evening of varied band music, with everything from the Franz Joseph Haydn overture to the opera “Armida” to the “Sounds of the Tijuana Brass”, plus marches by Karl King and John Philip Sousa among others, and a trombone section feature as well!
The closing concert of the summer season on July 23rd will be the band’s Grand Finale back in the Band Shell. Opening with Karl L. King’s most famous march, “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite”, along with Rossini’s classic overture “The Italian in Algiers”, it promises to be an exciting conclusion to another great season. This concert will feature the popular area brass quintet, Jive for Five, on an original composition, appropriately titled “Jive for Five,” along with an audience favorite, “Dixieland On Stage”. Members of the band’s percussion section will be featured on “Field Ayres”, a collection of traditional snare drum solos. This final concert always ends in the traditional circus way with the playing of Karl King’s march, “Auld Lang Syne”, as another season of band music at the Karl L. King Band Shell will draw to a close.

KING BAND CELEBRATES AMERICA’S INDEPENDENCE:
The Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge is planning a special concert on Sunday evening, July 2, beginning at 7:30 pm at the historic Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park to celebrate this year’s Independence Day holiday. There is no admission charge, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge.
An ice cream social, sponsored by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, will start around 6:30 pm. Homemade ice cream and fresh baked goodies will be available for purchase prior to and during the concert. Remember to bring along your own lawn chairs or blankets, since there is no public seating provided.
Conductor Jerrold P. Jimmerson has planned an exciting evening of band music to “Celebrate Independence”. Also involved in the evening’s program is Dan Cassady, assistant conductor, and Paul Bloomquist, announcer. Conductor Jimmerson invites persons to “wear their red, white, and blue and bring their small American flags to wave at appropriate times during this one hour tribute to independence.”
Opening this patriotic concert will be George Gershwin’s “Strike Up The Band”, followed by John Philip Sousa’s march, “Hail to the Spirit of Liberty”. March music is always part of every concert, and this week will include one of Karl L. King’s earliest and finest marches, “Sons of Veterans”, and his lively circus galop, “Sunshine”, along with William Laurier’s “133rd Infantry – Iowa National Guard”. This selection is a tribute to the 133rd Test Squadron based here in Fort Dodge, in celebration of their 75th anniversary.
Highlighting the program will be a collection of traditional American songs, “Broad Stripes and Bright Stars”. This fantasy is based on four songs which date from the earliest years in the formation of the United States of America. A trumpet trio will delight the audience by performing everyone’s favorite Leroy Anderson selection, “Bugler’s Holiday”.
Also on the program will be a tribute to jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong with “Satchmo!”, a medley including “What a Wonderful World”, “When the Saints Go Marching In”, “Saint Louis Blues”, and “Hello, Dolly!’
Scott Johnson will narrate a historical tribute to America during “Within These Hallowed Halls”, which will be introduced by bagpipe music from Lucas Fillmore, pastor at First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge.
The concert will close with the exciting “Overture Solennelle 1812”. This well-known overture, always a staple of July 4th celebrations around the country, was written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The piece commemorates Russia's successful defense of the French invasion of its country by Napoleon in 1812.
This will be followed by America’s inspiring national march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, and the playing of our National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. In case of inclement weather at the starting time, the concert may be delayed or cancelled.

KING BAND CONCERT SALUTES FATHER’S DAY:
The summer concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band will continue this Sunday evening, June 18th, starting at 7:30 pm. There is no admission charge, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. These concerts are held at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Conductor of the Band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson, and the Assistant Conductor is Dan Cassady, with announcer Paul Bloomquist. In case of inclement weather at the starting time, the concert may be cancelled.
An ice cream social by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church precedes each concert. Homemade ice cream and fresh baked goodies are available for purchase, starting around 6:30 pm. Persons attending these concerts are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs, since no seating is provided.
A wide variety of music is planned to appeal to all musical tastes during this special Father’s Day presentation. The concert will include Karl King’s marches, “Bolivar” and “Men of Music”, along with Henry Fillmore’s classic march, “The Man of the Hour”, and Charles Belstering’s, “March of the Steel Men”. Also on the program will be King’s famous circus galop, “The Big Cage”, dedicated to wild animal trainer Clyde Beatty.
Guest soloist for the evening will be David Lang, euphonium, from Independence IA. Mr. Lang is now retired after a very successful 32-year teaching career in eastern Iowa, having directed the Independence High School Bands to award-winning championship performances at the state and national levels with his marching, concert, and jazz bands. He currently performs as a member of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band and the Eastern Iowa Brass Band.
Mr. Lang is a frequent guest soloist with community bands, colleges, and high school groups, and has toured and performed in Europe as well. He will perform the classic solo, “Napoli”, perhaps the most famous solo by Sousa Band arranger and cornet virtuoso Herman Bellstedt. Conceived as a theme and variations form on a popular 19th-century song, Mr. Lang’s technical skills will amaze and dazzle the audience. Following that, Lang will perform the Victorian-era favorite from yesteryear, “Love’s Old Sweet Song”.
The evening’s classical offering will be the overture to the opera, “Raymond (The Queen’s Secret)”, by French composer Ambrose Thomas. Thomas attended the Paris Conservatory, and became one of the most successful French composers of his time. This opera had its premier in Paris in June 1851, and was a dismal failure, but the overture has become one of the most popular of all the French operatic works.
Lighter selections on the program include a medley of popular, well-known hit songs from the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, including “Do You Know the Way to San Jose’, and “What the World Need Now is Love” among other favorites, to the music from the movies with a suite of songs from “Superman”, written by the eminent film composer John Williams.
Conductor Jimmerson states that “this concert will provide a rare opportunity to hear an outstanding Euphonium soloist along with several other enjoyable songs from the band. Plan now to be at Oleson Park on Sunday evening for this special Father’s Day presentation. Let’s have a large crowd to show our guest soloist a warm Fort Dodge welcome”.
