I was a college student in Washington, DC when planes struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Looking back on that day 22 years ago, we mourn all the lives lost to the horrific 9/11 attacks. We will them nor the first responders and military members who sacrificed so much for the country we all love.

This Labor Day, I’m thankful to the working families and labor unions who strengthen our country. You’ve built America into what it is today, and I will always be by your side to protect workers’ rights.

Broward County AFL-CIO is one of the strongest advocates for working families here in South Florida. I was happy to talk with them this morning about my support for the PRO Act and their legislative priorities to guarantee the rights of workers.

More than 2 years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the news finally reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas.

158 years later, we commemorate this by reflecting on our progress and the accomplishments of Black Americans. As a Commissioner, I made it a Broward County holiday, and I am encouraged to see it become a federal holiday where we recommit to the pursuit of liberty and justice for all.

7 years have passed since 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded in the single deadliest attack against the LGBTQ+ community in American history.

The Pulse nightclub shooting remains a painful reminder of the threats facing LGBTQ+ Americans and of the devastation gun violence inflicts upon our nation. Today and every day, we must honor the 49 lives lost with action.

Part of my job is to make sure America pays its bills. I don’t think Congress should get paid until we do the bare minimum and pay off America’s credit card.

Florida women woke up this morning with less freedom than they had last night. The 6-week abortion ban just signed into law is one of the most restrictive bans in the country. It’s truly a shameful day in our state, as we make it significantly more difficult for women to access the healthcare they need.

I’ve always stood against anti-choice extremism, and I will continue fighting to make sure reproductive rights are protected by the federal government.
